We are helping Meg and Don Williams of Grahamstown, South Africa, and David Webster in identifying the ancestors and descendants of James and Elizabeth Prentice, and particularly the descendants of Jemima Prentice, #3v. Set out below is what we have so far from their emails of 21 May 2010 and later.

1. Thomas Prentice may have been b. c. 1810-1820, perhaps in, or near, Glassford, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he married in 1840. Glassford lies about 20 miles SE of central Glasgow and perhaps 10 miles SSW of Motherwell.

Glassford also lies only about 1.5 miles from Stonehouse where the family of Robert Prentice was probably living in 1821 when his dau., Isabella, married in Stonehouse. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1764, is #2 in our Fall 2002 article entitled Prentices of Stonehouse.

He m. Ann Wilson on 26 Jun 1840 in Glassford, Lanarkshire, They had 3 or more children, per the IGI:

  2. Gavin Prentice, b. 26 Sep 1856, Glassford.
  3. Ann Prentice, b. 16 Jun 1860, Glassford.
  4. William Prentice, b. 17 Jun 1860, Glassford.

2. Thomas Prentice was b. c. 1843, Chapelton, parish of Glassford, Lanarkshire. He appears in the 1891 census in Govan, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family where he was an "Ironship Caulker" per David Webster, email, 24 May 2010 and 25 May 2010.

He m. Janet King , b. c. 1844, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire. She was the dau. of William King (Cotton Weaver) and Jean Kirkland. Thomas and Janet had 6 or more children, including:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1870, Govan, Lanarkshire, Hammerman. At home in the 1891 census.

  6. Janet K.(King?) Prentice, b. c. 1880, Govan, Lanarkshire. At home in the 1891 census. She m. George Leyden in 1906, Govan, Glasgow. Children (possibly others):

He m. Elizabeth McKay on 13 Apr 1906, Glasgow. She was b. 11 Nov 1881, probably in Glasgow. She was the dau of George McKay (b. 24 Jun 1852, Glasgow) and Agnes Leitch (d. 15 Oct 1914, probably Glasgow.

Children of James and Elizabeth who may have remained in Glasgow or may have emigrated to Canada, the USA, or elsewhere.

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. 1 Mar 1907. (Meg and Don Williams and David Webster seek your help in identifying the descendants of Thomas.)
  2. Agnes Leitch Mackay Prentice, b. 21 Jul 1908 and d. 14 Mar 1992

  6. John Duncan Mackay, b. 9 Mar 1921 and d. in WW II on 1 Jun 1942, age 21 years.

Who are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

Who are the parents of Thomas Prentice who m. Ann Wilson on 26 Jun 1840 in Glassford, Lanarkshire?

As noted above, Glassford lies only about 1.5 miles from Stonehouse where the family of Robert Prentice was living from at least 1789 and who was probably living there in 1821 when his dau., Isabella, married in Stonehouse. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1764, is #2 in our Fall 2002 article entitled Prentices of Stonehouse.

Whether Robert Prentice, or perhaps a brother, is the father of Thomas Prentice is unclear and investigation is continuing.
