Update of 30 Aug 2011: According to "Dianne's Ancestors" at The Prentices of Glemsford, Suffolk and Langley, Essex, England . That should be viewed with caution as that website shows William with 15 children, including John. Also, earlier siblings were born in Glemsford, Suffolk, as well as a later brother, Ambrose while John is shown as born in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, some 60 miles to the southwest of Glemsford.
