Henry Prentiss of Canada and Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont

Henry Prentiss of Canada and Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2010 and Revised 31 May 2010

1. Henry Prentiss was b. c. 1829 in Canada. Not in the 1850 census. He appears with his wife and family in the 1860 census in Milton, Chittenden Co., Vermont.

Note: The 1880 census for his daughter, Augusta, says that Henry was b. in VT. However, the 1900 census for his daughter, Augusta, says that Henry was b. in "Canada Fr." Finally, Augusta's death record shows Henry as b. in VT, and identifies her mother as "Martha Maxfield, b. VT."

It is unclear whether he is the same person as Henry Prentis shown in the 1870 Milton, VT, census as b. c. 1823, Canada, with his wife, Eliza, b. c. 1827, VT, and daughter:

  1. Ellen Prentis, b. c. 1864, VT. 1870 at home in Milton, VT.

It is also unclear whether he is the same person as Henry Prentiss shown in the 1880 Colchester, Chittenden Co., VT, census as b. c. 1822, Canada, with his wife, Martha, b. c. 1832m Canada, and son:

  1. James Prentiss, b. c. 1869, NY. 1880 at home in Colchester, VT.

He m. Eliza who was b. c. 1827 in VT. They had 2 or more children, including:

  1. Augusta Prentiss, b. c. 1849, VT. 1860 at home in Milton, VT. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Mary Prentiss, b. c. 1850, VT. 1860 at home in Milton, VT.
  3. (perhaps) Ellen Prentis, b. c. 1864, VT (see above). 1870 at home in Milton, VT.
  4. (perhaps) James Prentiss, b. c. 1869, NY (see above). 1880 at home in Colchester, VT.

2. Augusta Prentiss, b. 29 Apr 1849, Westfield, VT, and d. 15 Jun 1950, age 101 years, in Essex, Chittenden Co., VT, where she had been living wince 1928; she was then a widow per Vermont Death Records . 1860 at home in Milton, Chittenden Co., VT. She appears in the 1870 census with her husband living in the home of Philander Moors whose relationship to her, if any, is unknown. 1880 census in Milton, 1900 census in Milton. No children at home.

She m. Charles Lyman Swan, b. 16 Aug 1848,Jacksonville, IL, and d. 9 Mar 1924, Milton, VT. He was the son of Riley Swan, b. c. 1809, VT, who was living with them in the 1880 Milton census. An Ancestor Chart for Charles can be found at Ancestry.com .

Children of Augusta and Charles:

  1. Agnes Swan, b. 16 Apr 1871, Milton, VT, and d. before 1934, Clarksburg, WV. 1880 at home in Milton. Not home in 1900.
  2. George Swan, b. 2 Oct 1874, Milton, VT, and d. after 1934, Essex, VT. 1880 at home in Milton. He m. 1st. Mabel M. Leach on 22 Sep 1897, Fairfield, VT. Their 8 children are set out at Ancestry.com . He m. 2nd Florence Jane Day on 28 Apr 1931, Essex, VT.

Conclusions

Henry Prentiss was probably b. in Canada per his census records, although some records for his daughter, Augusta, indicate a VT birth.

The IGI has a Henry Prentiss, b. c. 1829, Canada, son of Oliver Prentiss and Lydia De Long. The problem is that we do not show that Oliver and Lydia had a son named Henry. And, if they did, there is no present evidence that such Henry is the same person as the Henry Prentiss who is the subject of this article.

Investigation is continuing.
