George Washington Prentice of TN, MO & AR

George Washington Prentice of Tennessee, Missouri & Arkansas
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2009 and Revised 24 Oct 2015

Debbie Chalfant, in her letter of 31 Mar 1995, is trying to identify her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. George Washington Prentice was born about 1868 in TN (per 1920 Concord Twp., Pemiscot Co., MO census listing his occupation as a farmer). He later lived in MO and AR where some of his children were born. He apparently died sometime between 1920 and 1930. He does not appear in the 1870, 1880, 1900 or 1910 census.

He m. Rosa Bell Laster who was b. c. 1881 in TN (per 1920 census). Debbie Chalfant indicates it may have been a second marriage for George. George may be deceased by 1930 as Rosa appears in the 1930 census in Hector Co., AR, without a husband, as Mrs. Rosa Bell Goodman. Children (per 1920 and 1930 census):

  1. George R. Prentice, b. c 1902, MO. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Lonnie Prentice, b. c. 1906, MO. Not at home in 1930.
  3. Belle Prentice, b. c. 1908, AR. Not at home in 1930.
  4. Frannie Prentice, b. c. 1910, MO. Not at home in 1930.
  5. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1913, AR. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  6. Mildred Prentice, b. c. 1915, AR. At home in 1930.
  7. Wilburn Prentice, b. 20 Jul 1915, AR and d. 16 Feb 1998, Lynnville, Giles Co., TN (per census and SSDI).
  8. Delbert Prentice, b. 16 Sep 1917, AR and d. Jul 1986, Dyess, Mississippi Co., AR (per census and SSDI)
  9. Reuben/Ruben Prentice b. 16 Dec 1919, MO. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

The Arkansas births may have been in Burrette (or maybe Burdette), Mississippi Co., Arkansas.

2. George R. Prentice, b. c 1902, MO. Not at home in 1930. It is unclear whether he is the George Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 8 Aug 1901, obtained his SS# in MO, and d. Aug 1977 in Caruthersville, Pemiscot Co., MO.

The SSDI also shows the following persons dying in Caruthersville or Hayti, Pemiscot Co., MO, but it is unclear what relationship they may have to George or each other, if any:

  • Aubrey C. Prentice, b. 24 Mar 1906, obtained his SS# in MO, and d. Jun 1988 in Caruthersville. Not in 1910 and 1920 census.
  • Marie Prentice, b. 8 Aug 1901, obtained her SS# in MO, and d. Jul 1983 in Caruthersville.
  • Dorothy C. Prentice, b. 17 Feb 1922, obtained her SS# in MO, and d. 17 Feb 1987 in Hayti.

3. Walter Prentice, b. c. 1913, AR. He appears in the 1930 census in Hector Co., AR, living at home. By 1930 his parents and family had moved to MO. He does not appear in the SSDI.

4. Reuben/Ruben Prentice, b. 16 Dec 1919, MO and d. 6 Nov 1992, Keiser, Mississippi Co., MO (per census and SSDI). Reuben Prentice is shown in the 1930 census Hector, Mississippi Co.,AR as b. c. 1920 in Arkansas, son of Mrs. Rosa Vera Goodman, b. c. 1880, TN. Although Reuben's father does not appear in the household census record, the 1930 census record says that Reuben's father was also b. in TN.

Reuben m. Unknown and had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Reuben Prentice Jr. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]

5. Reuben B. Prentice was b. 1 Sep 1941, Arkansas, and d. 29 Aug 1999, Olive Branch, DeSoto Co., MS. Bur. Autumn Woods Mem. Park. 1987 in Southhaven, MS. 1993-2000 in Memphis, TN. 2001 Horn Lake, MS.

He m. Betty Jean "Jeannie". She was b. c. 1946 and d. 16 Jul 2005 at Horn Lake, MS. Her obituary reads as follows:

Walls - Commercial Appeal, The (Memphis, TN) - Tuesday, July 19, 2005: BETTY JEAN 'JEANNIE' PRENTICE

BETTY JEAN 'JEANNIE' PRENTICE, 59, of Horn Lake, MS, died July 16, 2005 at her residence after a long illness.

Jeannie was a Lady of many talents, and her true passions were gardening, interior decorating, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Reuben Prentice, Jr. She is survived by 2 daughters, Bridgette Hudson-House of Horn Lake and Tracy Hudson-Salerno and her husband, Dominic, of San Diego, CA; one son, Robert "Bobby" Hudson and his wife, Sherry, of Horn Lake; a close friend, Jim Stewart of Horn Lake; 5 grandchildren, Larry House, Tyler House, Courtney Hudson, Kelsey Hudson, and William Seckt.

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at Brantley Funeral Home in Olive Branch. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with burial in Autumn Woods Cemetery. She dedicated her life to her family, and she will be forever missed. The family requests memorial contributions in her honor may be made to the American Heart Association or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The parentage of the children named in the above obituary is unclear, indicating perhaps that that the children are those of Betty by a prior marriage:

  1. Bridgette Hudson-House of Horn Lake, MS.
  2. Tracy Hudson-Salerno. She m. Dominic (Solerno?, of San Diego, CA.
  3. Robert "Bobby" Hudson. He m. Sherry, of Horn Lake, MS.

Who are George Washington Prentice's Parents?

We had suggested that George may be a son of Robert Prentice (b. c. 1831, TN) and his wife, Elizabeth (b. c. 1831, IL) whose children are listed as follows in the 1870 Putnam County census: (Per Barbara Stephenson, E-mail, 9 Mar 1998)

  1. James Prentice, b. 1852, TN.
  2. George W. Prentice, b. 1867, TN.

If so, George's marriage, his marriage to Elizabeth may have been a first marriage and his marriage to Rosa Bell a second marriage. For more about that possibility, see Robert Prentice of VA and DeKalb Co., TN.

However, a re-check of the 1920 census shows it listing his father as b. in Michigan and that his mother was b. in Tennessee.
