1. David Prentice, b. c. 1853, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.
He m. Mary Muir on 31 Dec 1875, Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland. They appear in the 1891 census living at 29 New Rows, Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. David does not appear in the 1901 census, but Mary appears, apparently a widow, in the 1901 Paisley, Renfrewshire census living at 19 Queen Street. Children:
- Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1877, Linwood, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. Not home in 1901.
- Mary Prentice, b. c. 1879, Linwood, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. Not home in 1901.
- Annie Prentice, b. c. 1879, Linwood, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. 1901 at home.
- Jane/Jeanie Prentice, b. c. 1882, Linwood, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan, Renfrewshire. 1901 at home
- Jessie Prentice, dau., b. c. 1884, Clippens, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan. Not home in 1901.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1886, Clippens, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan. 1901 at home.
- David Prentice, b. c. 1889, Clippens, Renfrewshire. 1891 at home in Kilbarchan. 1901 at home.

David Prentice, b. c. 1853, Edinburgh, Midlothian, does not appear in the 1861 census. However, he might be the David Prentice, Timekeeper, shown in the 1871 census in Burntisland, Fife (across the bay and north of Edinburgh), as the son of Susan Sangster, b. c. 1834, Edinburgh, the head of the household, and apparently either a widow or divorced. Other children of Susan Sangster shown in the 1871 census are:
- William Sangster, b. c. 1859, Burntisland, Fife.
- Elizabeth Sangster, b. c. 1864, Burntisland, Fife.
- James Knight Sangster, b. c. 1866, Burntisland, Fife
It may be that Susan's first husband was the father of David Prentice, and that Susan m. 2nd Mr. Sangster who may have been deceased by 1871.
