William Prentice of Wenhaston, Suffolk, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2008 and Revised 2 Sep 2008

1. William Prentice may have been b. c. 1790-1800. His name and marriage comes from the IGI. He does not appear in the 1841 census.

He m. Maria Smith on 30 Oct 1820, Wenhaston, Suffolk, England, per IGI. She may be the the Maria Prentice shown in the 1841 Wenhasten census as b. c. 1791 in Suffolk and in 1841 living in Wenhaston, Suffolk. No kinship is shown, but one could infer that she might be the mother of William, #2 below, since she was about 33 years older than William who was also then living in Wenhasten.

In the same household in 1841 Wenhasten was Elizabeth Harper, b. c. 1786, Suffolk, with no husband shown. She might, or might not, be Elizabeth's sister.

Children of William and Maria.

  4. William Prentice, b. c. 1857, Wenhaston, Suffolk. At home in Wenhaston in 1861. At home in Wangford with his parents in the 1881 census. Living with his father in the 1901 Frostenden census.

Who are William Prentice's Parents?

William Prentice may have been b. c. 1790-1800. Living with William's family in the 1851 census in Wenhaston (incorrectly indexed as "Prescher") was Naomi Prentice, b. c. 1787, age 64, Bramfield, Suffolk, and called a Lodger. As noted above, Bramfield lies only about 2 miles SW of Wenhaston.

The similarity of ages, proximity of location, and the fact that William named a daughter, Naomi, suggests that William and Naomi might be siblings. Or, Naomi might be a sister-in-law.

Investigation is continuing.
