By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2008 and Revised: 26 Jun 2008

Update of 26 Jun 2008: Although confirmation is still needed, it seems likely that William Prentice is No. 6viii (b. 2 Feb 1824, Carstairs) in our Spring 2002 article about William Prentice of Carstairs, Lanark, Scotland .

We are helping Penny Warne is efforts to trace her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

1. William Prentice was b. c. 1823 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland with his wife and family. He does not appear in the 1881 Canada census with his children and either remained in Scotland or might be then deceased

He m. Elizabeth who was b. c. 1833, Lanark, Lanarkshire. She does not appear in the 1881 Canada census with her children and either remained in Scotland or might be then deceased. Children per 1871 Lanark census:

  1. Janet S. Prentice, b. c. 1858. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1864. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  3. Thomas P Prentice, b. c. 1866. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]
  4. George Prentice, b. c. 1869. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [5]

2. Janet S. Prentice, b. c. 1858. She appears in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland with her family. She later appears as Jennett Prentice (b. c. 1861, Scotland) with her siblings Robert, George and Thomas in the 1881 census in Luther West, Wellington North Co., Ontario, Canada.

3. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1864. He appears in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland with his family. He later appears with his siblings Janet/Jennett, George and Thomas in the 1881 census in Luther West, Wellington North Co., Ontario, Canada.

4. Thomas P Prentice, b. c. 1866. He appears in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland with his family. He later appears with his siblings Janet/Jennett, George and Robert in the 1881 census in Luther West, Wellington North Co., Ontario, Canada. Like his siblings in the 1881 census, he is United Presbyterian. Thomas Prentice later appears in the 1911 census in Luther West, Wellington North, Ontario as a widower. He does not appear in the earlier 1901 census.

He m. unknown who does not appear in the 1911 census. Children appearing in the 1911 census are:

  1. Elizabeth/Lizzie Fessey, Daughter-in-law, b. Dec 1891. Married. It is unclear who her husband is since all males in the census were widowed or single.
  2. Oswald Prentice, b. Jan 1894. Single.
  3. Thomas Prentice, b. Jan 1897. Single.
  4. Douglas Prentice, b. Nov 1901. Single.

Penny Warne advises that Thomas Prentice m. Marion Hamilton.of West Luther Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario, Canada. Marion is the daughter of William Hamilton From Carnwath, Lanark County, Scotland (near Glasgow) and Sarah Robison from Ireland.

Unfortunately, Penny Warne did not have any dates for Thomas Prentice, so we cannot tell whether Thomas Prentice is the one b. Nov 1866 or Jan 1897.

Thomas and Marion had a farm in West Luther Township, not far fron the village of Arthur.

Elsewhere on PrenticeNet, on the cemetary listings page, we find the following burials although we are not yet sure if they are the above Thomas and Marion.:

  • Marion PRENTICE, Greenfield Cemetery, Albert-Bethel-Eden Vale-Hope-Mt Carmel, Wellington, Peel; WW-4357

  • Thomas PRENTICE, Greenfield Cemetery, Albert-Bethel-Eden Vale-Hope-Mt Carmel, Wellington, Peel; WW-4357

5. George Prentice, b. c. 1869. He appears in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland with his family. He later appears with his siblings Janet/Jennett, Rpbert and Thomas in the 1881 census in Luther West, Wellington North Co., Ontario, Canada.

Who are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

Investigation is continuing.
