Prentices of Doddinghurst, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2008 and Revised 9 May 2009

We know that the immigrant Henry Prentice of Cambridge, MA, had some roots in Doddinghurst, Essex Co., England, which lies approximately 10 miles SW of Chelmsford.

One of his ancestors, Albon Prentis was baptized on 3 March 1566 in Earls Colne. He is named in his father's 1586 Will. Albon may have d. in Doddinghurst, Essex. We do not know his wife's name. The known children of Albon are:

  1. Mary Prentis (Marye Prentise) born 5 Jun 1608 in Doddinghurst
  2. Lawrence Prentis born in 1611, Doddinghurst, Essex, and d. at the age of 3 on 17 Apr 1614 (per IGI).
  3. Margaret Prentis born in 1615; she married Thomas Glascock on 26 Oct 1641 in Doddinghurst.

A review of the IGI discloses the following Prentices also having a link to Doddinghurst:

  1. Agnis Prentis, b. c. 1595-1600, m. Henry Hogg on 18 May 1619, Doddinghurst.
  2. Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1641 and called of Doddinghurst, Essex, England, m. Sarah Moss in 1666 in Doddinghurst.
  3. Rebecca Prentice, dau. of Matthew Prentice, was chr. 22 Jan 1644, Doddinghurst.
