Nathan Prentice of VT and Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., New York

Nathan Prentice of VT and Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., New York
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2007 and Revised 15 Jun 2007

We are seeking information about Nathan Prentice who is #91 in our John-3 eBook. Here is what we have so far:

1. Nathan Prentice was b. c. 1769 in Vermont and may have d. before 1830. He appears in the 1820 census in Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY.

He is also probably the same "Nathan" shown in the 1810 census living in Seneca County which abuts Ontario County.

The daughters identified, and son James, are named in the History of Nunda, but their parentage is unclear. They are tentatively identified as Nathan's children based on the fact that 5 females under 16 are shown in the 1820 census, as well as the fact that those names do not appear in later census rolls under the names of his sons.

He may have m. Betsey/Elizabeth who was b. c. circa 1785. She appears in the 1830 and 1840 census in Mt. Morris, Livingston Co., NY. Children:

  1. John Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .[234]
  2. Hiram Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [235]
  3. (perhaps) Amanda Prentice. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [236]
  4. Emeline Prentice. Born, circa 1820, in NY [216]. Died, 21 Nov 1841. Burial in Greenmont Cem., Livingston, NY.

Who are Nathan Prentice's Parents?

Nathan Prentice may be the son of Simeon Prentice. While there is as yet no direct evidence prooving Nathan is Simeon's son, in 1820 he was living in Mt. Morris at the same time as Elisha, a probable son of Simeon.
