Jennett Prentice of Scotland and Canada

Jennett Prentice of Scotland and Canada
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2008 and Revised 3 Aug 2011

Update of 3 Aug 2011: Jannet Prentice is #5.2(i) in our Spring 2002 article entitled William Prentice of Carstairs, Lanark, Scotland . That article now replaces this article.

1. Jannett Prentice was b. c. 1861 in Scotland. She appears in the 1881 census in Luther West, Luther East, Wellington North, Ontario, Canada, in the home of William Hamilton, b. c. 1825, Scotland, and his wife, Eliza, b. c. 1833, Scotland. Also appearing in the home were:

  1. Robert Prentice, 1865, Scotland
  2. Thomas Prentice, 1867, Scotland
  3. George Prentice, b. c. 1869, Scotland
  4. William James Hamilton, b. c. 1861, Ontario
  5. Maregret Hamilton, b. c. 1863, Ontario
  6. Thomas Hamilton, b. c. 1865, Ontario
  7. Marion Hamilton, b. c. 1866, Ontario
  8. Elezebeth Hamilton, Elizabeth, b. c. 1867, Ontario
  9. John Hamilton, b. c. 1869, Ontario
  10. Charles Hamilton, b. c. 1870, Ontario
  11. Jane Hamilton, b. c. 1872, Ontario
  12. Sarah Hamilton, b. c. 1874, Ontario
  13. Robina Hamilton, b. c. 1876, Ontario
  14. William Hamilton, b. c. 1880-81, Ontario
  15. James Robinson, b. c. 1881, Ontario

Who are the Parents of Jannett, Robert, Thomas and George Prentice>

It seems highly likely that those children are those of William Prentice, b. c. 1823, Carstairs, Lanarkshire, and Elizabeth, b. c. 1833, Lanark, Lanarkshire, who appear in the 1871 census in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Who are William and Elizabeth? Only a guess for now, but:

  • William might be the son of James Prentice and Margaret Start, #6 in our Spring 2002 article about William Prentice of Carstairs , and that William might be:

  • the William Prentice who m. Eliza Prosser as shown in the IGI as parents of Thomas Prentice, b. 28 Nov 1865, Lanark, lanarkshire.
