James Prentice of Holmbush, Lanarkshire, Scotland

James Prentice of Holmbush, Lanarkshire, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Spring 2007 and Revised 28 Dec 2006

1. James Prentice was b. c. 1815 in either Cambusnethan (per 1851 census) or Holmbush (per 1861 census), Lanarkshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1861 census in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family.

It is unclear whether the 1851 family is the same family as that shown in the 1861 census. For tracking purposes only, we have tentatively identified them as the same family since the birth dates seem to correspond.

He m. Grace, b. c. 1819, (Cambusnethan) Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Known children (note: The 1851 census says they were all b. in Cambusnethan, but different places are shown in the 1861 census. For convenience, we use the 1861 location with the 1851 census location in parenthesis):

  1. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1839, Cambusnethan. It is unclear if she d. before 1849.
  2. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1841 Cambusnethan (per 1851 census). Not home in 1861.
  3. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1847, (Cambusnethan) Wishaw, Lanarkshire. At home in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire in 1861.
  4. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1849, Overton, Lanarkshire. At home in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire in 1861.
  5. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1845, (Cambusnethan) Wishaw, Lanarkshire. At home in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire in 1861.
  6. Elizabth Prentice, b. c. 1849, Cambusnethan. It is unclear if she d. before 1853.
  7. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1853, Garrion Gill, Lanarkshire. At home in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire in 1861.
