Isaac Prentice of Shaftsbury, VT and Early, Sac Co., IA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2007 and Revised 22 Jun 2007

Isaac Prentice is No. 104 in our John-3 eBook and for whom we are seeking descendant information. Here is what we have so far:

104. Isaac Prentice (son of James Prentice, #30, and his wife, Abigail Fuller) [288]. He was b. 10 Sep 1796, in Shaftsbury, Bennington, VT [76]. Died, 22 Oct 1876, in Early, Sac, IA. Census: 1840, in Castile, Wyoming, NY. Census: 1850, in Merton, Waukesha, WI. Occupation: Farmer.

Isaac lived in Shaftsbury until at least 31 August 1827 when he was the grantee of a Quit Claim Deed from his brother, Elisha, to their father's estate (Bennington Probate Rec., v. 14, p. 102) Shortly thereafter, probably about 1828 or 1829, Isaac moved to Castile, Genesee County, New York. He was there at the 1840 Census. In February, 1844, he purchased, in Castile, 25 acres from his step-mother, Betsey, in which she had a life-estate; in April, 1844 he sold the 25 acres to a third party.

It may have been about that time that Isaac moved to Merton, Waukesha County, Wisconsin where he farmed.

Isaac and his wife are shown living with his son, Hosea, in the 1870 Aledo, IL census.

Isaac spent the latter days of his life in Sac County, IA. A granddaughter, Nina Steeg, recalls: "Grandpa Prentice lived with us after grandma died, and he lived in our home for 17 years. He was a delightful person, very handsome, and in later years had the most beautiful head of thick white hair, white as snow. He was a carpenter and had a shop in Early."

He married Sarah Stanley, 24 Feb 1818, in Shaftsbury, Bennington, VT [289]. Sarah Stanley was b. c. 1807, in VT [290]. Died, 1871, in Sac Co., IA [291]. Sarah was the daughter of John Stanley (b. 15 Jun 1850, Coventry, Tolland Co., CT, and d. 30 Sep 1806, Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., VT) and his 3rd wife, Anna Antizzel, b. c. 1755, VT, who he m. c. 1802, VT. (Ref: LDS Ancestral File)

Anna Antizzel may be related to the only family with a phonetically similar name to Antizzel family appearing in the 1800 census in VT, Simon Antizle who was then living in Bennington, Bennington Co., VT, which lies about 10 miles south of Shaftsbury. Simon was b. 10 Jun 1740 in Windham, CT, m. Martha Fuller on 28 Oct 1767, Coventry, CT, and by 1792 was living in VT where his son, Simon Antisdel Jr., was born. Simon would have been only about 15 when Anna was b. about 1755, so Anna might be a daughter, or daughter in law, of Simon's parents, Lawrence Antisell and Mary Armstrong. Additional investigation is needed.

Prior to his 3rd marriage to Anna Antizzel, John Stanley had m. 1st Mary Fuller on 15 Oct 1772, Coventry, Tolland Co., CT, and m. 2nd, Sarah Demic on 26 Nov 1801, VT. Mary Fuller was the dau. of Elijah Fuller and Mary Millington whose other daughter, Abigail Fuller m. James Prentice, Isaac Prentice's father.

John Stanley was the son of John Stanley (b. c. 1723 and d. 14 Sep 1807, Shaftsbury) and Lucy Edwards (b. 7 Mar 1726 in Coventry, Tolland Co., CT, and d. 12 Dec 1787 in Shaftsbury) per LDS Ancestral file.

Lucy Edwards was the dau. of Daniel Edwards (b. 3 Jan 1705/6, Windham, Windham Co., CT) and Hannah Fuller (b. Aug 1796 in Attleboro, Bristol Co., MA). An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com .

John Stanley is almost certainly the John Stanley who appears in the 1820 census in Shaftsbury as age 26-45 and b. c. 1875-1895. His wife is in the same age range and they show 5 daughters ranging in age from under 10 to over 26 at a time when Sarah Stanley would have already been married in 1818 and presumably out of the household.

He appears to be the same John Stanley who appears in the 1850 and 1860 Shaftsbury census as b. c. 1785, VT, farmer, with a 4th wife, Ruth, b. c. 1799, and daughter, Olive, b. c. 1838. Those persons also appear in Ancestry.com . If earlier information is correct naming Sarah's mother as Sarah Dimock/Danic, then Ruth may be a 2nd wife.

married (probably) Samuel S. Eldridge, 7 Feb 1840. She is
