Hosea Prentice of Vermont, Wisconsin and Iowa
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2007 and Revised 27 Jul 2007

We are seeking information about the descendants of Hosea Prentice who is #275 in our John-3 eBook. Here is what we have so far:

275. Hosea Prentice (Isaac, 104). Born, 19 Dec 1818, in Shaftsbury, Bennington, VT [76]. Died, 5 Dec 1909, in Sac City, Sac, IA at the age of 91. Burial in Sac City Cem., Sac, IA. Census: 1850, in Merton, Waukesha, WI. Census: 1880, in Leadville, Lake, CO. Occupation: Farmer.

Born at Shaftsbury, he was living in nearby Hoosick Falls, Rensselaer Co., NY in 1841 and 1842 when his sons George and Harlow were born. He later moved to Wisconson where his daughter, Ida was born in 1854. He is probably the Hosea Prentice shown in U. S. Land Records as a resident of Milwaukee Co., WI in 1848 who purchased land in Waukesha Co., WI.

The 1870 census shows Hosea and his family living in Aledo, IL where his occupation is shown as that of a Stove and Tinware Dealer. By 1880 he was living in Leadville, Lake Co., CO. At some later date, he moved to Sac City, Sac Co., IA where he died at the age of 91.

He married, first, Diantha Surdam, 1841, in NY. Born, circa 1822, in NY. Died, 1858, in Portland, Dodge, WI. Census: 1850, in Merton, Waukesha,WI. So far we have not identified her parents, but a posting by Sharon Hagloch relating to Hoosic, NY, near where Hosea and Diantha lived in Hoosick Falls, tells us that;

    There is a book by the name of Genealogy of the Surdam Family that says that all Sardams, Surdams and Van Surdams are descendants of Lawrence and Samuel, sons of Teunis Pietersz. Let me give you a short excerpt from the book.

    "Samuel lived at Great Barrington, Mass., and Salisbury, Conn., and died at the latter place in 1772, leaving three sons and two daughters. Lawrence died at Great Barrington in 1731 and left a widow, Elenor, and three sons, Peter, Andrew and Tunis. Tunis, our ancestor, lived and died (1808) at Salisbury, Conn. Andrew also lived at Salisbury, and died in 1809, leaving children. The descendants of Samuel and Andrew have generally spelled the name Sardam. Peter and his wife, four sons and three daughters removed from Salisbury to Hoosick, NY., where he died in 1801.
