George Prentice of Scotland and Maryland

George Prentice of Scotland and Maryland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2007 and Revised 31 Oct 2007

The following is based on a GenForum posting by Jim Ross and his email of 30 Oct 2007:

1. George Prentice was b. c. 1825 in Scotland and may have d. before 1858 when his wife remarried.

He m. Jane Forsythe on 13 Feb 1848, Bothwell, Lanarkshire. She was b. c. 1829, also in Scotland, and d. 20 Mar 1883 in Viroqua, Vernon Co., WI.. They emigated to America aboard the "Sea Bird" from Nova Scotia on 1 Jul 1850, destination Maryland. Jane's maiden surname might have been Ferguson as there was a Mary Ferguson, b. c. 1795, Scotland, living with Jane's family in the 1870 census in Viroqua, Vernon Co., WI; Mary does not appear in earlier US census records. However, Jim Ross' email of 30 Oct 2007 also says that Ida Arnott listed her mother's maiden surname as Forsythe and says that there is a George Prentice/Jane Forsyth marriage in Scottish records on 13 Feb 1848 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland (per IGI).

George and Jane appear in the 1850 census in Allegany Co., MD. Children per census records:

  1. Mary Prentice, b. c. 1849, MD. At home in 1870. She m. Cassius Pulver on 29 Oct 1877. He was b. Jul 1844 in NY and d. 1 Oct 1931 in Omaha, NE.
  2. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1852, MD. At home in 1870 in Viroqua, Vernon Co., WI.

George may have d. before 1858 when his wife, Jane, m. 2nd David Arnott. He was b. Jun 1815 in Edinburgh, Scotland and d. 11 Jul 1894 in Springview, NE. They lived in WI where they appear in the 1870 census in Viroqua Vernon Co., WI, and later in NE where he died She d. 20 Mar 1883 in Vroqua Co., WI. They had 3 or more children, including:

  1. Christina Arnott, b. c. 1861, WI. At home in 1870. Not in 1880 census.
  2. Ida Arnott, b. c. 1864, WI. At home in 1870. Not in 1880 census. She was the great grandmother of Jim Ross' wife.
  3. Ada Arnott, b. c. 1866, WI. At home in 1870. At home in 1870.

It is unclear whether he is the David Arnott who appears in the 1890 Veterans Schedules as having served as a Private in the Army from 1861 to 1865 and living in 1890 in Custer, Keya Paha, NE. Jim Ross' email of 30 Oct 2007 advises that David Arnott kwas a Civil War veteran, having served in the 18th WI Infantry.

Who are George Prentice's Parents?

Since George was b. c. 1825 in Scotland, we searched the 1841 census to see if we could find him. We found 3 men of that name:

  1. George Prentice, b. c. 1825, Lanarkshire and in 1841 living in Clarkston, Lanarkshire, son of William Prentice, b. c. 1796, Lanarkshire, and his wife, Janet, b. c. 1802, Lanarkshire. Not in 1851 census.

  2. George Prentice, b. c. 1826, Lanarkshire, and in 1841 living in Bothwell Holytown, Lanarkshire. Not living with either parent. Apparently not in 1851 census. Jim Ross' email of 30 Oct 2007 says that Ida Arnott listed her mother's maiden name as Forsythe and says that there is a George Prentice/Jane Forsyth marriage in Scottish records on 13 Feb 1848 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland, which lies a short distance SE of Glasgow.

  3. George Prentice, b. c. 1826, Scotland, and in 1841 living in Edinburgh St. Cuthberts, Midlothaian. Not living with either parent. He can be eliminated since he appears in the 1851 St. Cutberts' census.

Tentative Conclusion about George Prentice's Parents

There is a good chance that George Prentice may be the George Prentice, b. c. 1826, Lanarkshire, and who, in 1841 was living in Bothwell Holytown Civil Parish, Lanarkshire without his parents. He apparently is not in the 1851 Scotland census, and may be George Prentice who m. Jane Forsythe in Bothwell Holytown on 13 Feb 1848 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland.

On the theory that George's parents probably also lived in Bothwell Holytown Civil Parish, we checked the 1841 census to see what Prentice family might also be living there with a male old enough to be George's father. We found a family living in Bothwell Holytown Civil Parish that seemed to fit: David Prentice, b. c. 1796, who appears with his apparent children:

  1. Cecilia Prentice, b. c. 1821, Lanarkshire.
  2. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1826, Lanarkshire.
  3. Janet Prentice, b. c. 1829, Lanarkshire.
  4. William Prentice, b. c. 1831, Lanarkshire. He does not appear in the 1851 census.

George, b. c. 1825, would fit nicely into that household. Also shown in the 1841 household were William McCole, b. c. 1821, and Thomas Pettigrew, b. c. 1826.

Finally, and although additional research is needed for confirmation, there is a chance that David Prentice might be the David Prentice who is #1vi in our Fall 2006 article entitled David Prentice of Shotts, Lanark, Scotland .
