Franklin Prentice of Crawford Co., Iowa

Franklin Prentice of Crawford Co., Iowa
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2008 and Revised 5 Oct 2008

Update of 5 Oct 2008: This article is now replaced by our Winter 2008 article entitled Hiram Prentice of VA and Canada .

1. Franklin Prentice, b. Jun 1846, IA. Not in 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 census. He appears in the 1900 Crawford Co., IA census with his wife and family.

In that 1900 Crawford Co., IA, census, Franklin is living next door to the divorced Alma A. (Hunter) Prentice and her children who are #1 in our article entitled Jacob Prentice and Alma A. Hunter .

Such proximity seems to suggest kinship, but the biography of Hiram Prentice, Jacob's father, in our article at Franklin Prentice of Canada and IA makes clear that the 1846 Franklin Prentice is not a sibling of Alma's husband, Jacob Lewis Prentice.

Franklin does not appear in the 1910 census. Franklin appears, without his wife, in the 1920 Boas Co., IA census

He m. Mary E. Brogdon, b. Jul 1852, OH.. Children:

  1. Millie L. Prentice, b. Jul 1881, NE.
  2. Minnie (?) Prentice, b. Aug 1885, NE.
  3. Myrtle L. Prentice, b. Jun 1895, NE. She is living with her father in the 1920 Boas Co., IA census.

Living with Franklin's family in 1900 was Sarah Brogden, b. Jul 1820, NY and called mother in law.

Living with Franklin and Myrtle in 1920 was Leroy C. Prentice, age 3 9/12 and b. c. 1916-17 in IA, called a grandson. He might be Myrtle's son, but that is unclear. Leroy does not appear in the SSDI.
