1. Alexander Prentice was b. c. 1816 in Scotland. His place of birth is unclear:

  1. The 1841 census says was b, in Scotland.
  2. The 1851 census says he was b. in Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
  3. The 1861 census says he was b. in Lanarkshire.

He appears in the 1841 census in Galashiels, Selkirkshire; in the 1851 census in Melrose, Roxburghshire, and in the 1861 census again in Galashiels, Selkirkshire, with his wife and family. For the location of Galashiels, (see map).

He m. 1st Agnes, b. c. 1821 in Scotland. She appears in the 1841 census but not in the 1851 census and may by then be deceased. Known children per census records:

  1. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1839, Selkirkshire, Scotland. Apparently deceased by 1846 as another Alexander was b. in 1846.
  2. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1841, Selkirkshire. At home in 1841 and 1851.
  3. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1846, Galashiels, Selkirkshire. At home in 1851 and 1861.
  4. Agnes H. Prentice, b. c. 1845, Galashiels, Selkirkshire. At home in 1851 and 1861.
  5. Mary F/D Prentice, b. c. 1847, Galashiels, Selkirkshire (per 1851 census) or Melrose, Roxburghshire (per 1861 census). At home in 1851 and 1861.

He m. 2nd Margaret, b. c. 1831, Smailholm, Roxburghshire. They appear in the 1861 census in Galashiels with their children, above, and:

  1. Isabella Aitchison, b. c. 1860, Galashiels, probably a daughter of Margaret by a prior marriage.
