A. Unknown Prentice, perhaps b. c. 1775-1785, and perhaps in, or near, Dalziel where his son, Alexander was born.
He m. Unknown. They had 2 or more children, including:
- Alexander Prentice was b. c. 1807, Dalziel (now Motherwell), Lanarkshire, Scotland. . . . [1]
- Janet Prentice, b. c. 1814, Dalziel, Lanarkshire. Identified as a sister to Alexander in the 1871 Hamilton census. Living with her nephew, James, #1v, below, in the 1881 and 1891 Hamilton census.
1. Alexander Prentice was b. c. 1807, Dalziel (now Motherwell), Lanarkshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1851 census living at 80 Townhead St., Hamilton, Lanarkshire, with his wife and family where he was a "Carter and Grocer." In the 1871 Hamilton census he was living at 78 Townhead Street and was a "Grocer and Spiurit Retailer."

- James Prentice, b. c. 1848, Hamilton. At home there in 1851 and 1871. 1881 and 1891 census in Hamilton, unmarried, and living with his aunt, Janet Prentice, b. c. 1814, Dalziel. It is unclear whether he is the James Prentice shown in the 1901 Hamilton census as b. c. 1850, Hamilton, a single Boarder, unmarried.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1850, Hamilton. At home there in 1851 and apparently d. before 1853 as a later son has the same name.
- William Prentice, b. c. 1853, Hamilton. At home there in 1861 and 1871. In the 1891 census he is unmarried and living with the family of his brother, David, #1a and #2, below. Occupation: Draper. He may be the William F. Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Paisley, Renfrewshire, as a Draper, unmarried, living at Camnethan, Arkleston Rd., with John B. Main and Jeannie Love.
- John Prentice, b. c. 1856, Hamilton. At home there in 1861 and 1871. He may be the John Prentice appearing in the 1891 census in Glasgow Barony, Lanarkshire, as b. c. 1855, Hamilton, an unmarried Boarder, occupation: Carter. He later appears in the 1901 census in Hamilton as an unmarried Boarder and Carter.
2. David Prentice, b. c. 1841 Hamilton, Lanarkshire. At home there in 1851 and 1871.
He m. Christina Gilchrist. They appear in the 1881 and 1901 Greenock West census. Children:
- Helen/Ellen Joanna Prentice, b. 8 Jan 1867 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881. 1891 census living with her brother, Alexander, below.
- Alexander Prentice, b. 4 Jun 1868, Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881. 1891 census an unmarried servant in Cathcart, Renfrewshire. 1901 census a General Practitioner Registered in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, living with his sister, Helen, above.
- Jessie Frame Prentice, b. 26 Mar 1870 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881.
- Christina Gilchrist Prentice, b. 22 Sep 1871 Middle-East-West Parishes, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881 and 1901.
- William Gilchrist Prentice, b. 21 Jul 1873 Middle-East-West Parishes, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881 and 1901.
- David J. Prentice, b. c. 1876, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881. Not in 1891 and later census.
- James G. Prentice, b. c. 1878, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1881 and 1901.
- Jane A. Prentice, b. c. 1883, Greenock, Renfrew. At home in 1901.
3. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1843, Hamilton. At home there in 1851 and 1871. He appears in the 1871 census in Glasgow Springburn, Lanarkshire, as a Joinder living at 26 Dunchattan Street with his wife and family. 1891 census and 1901 census in Hamilton living at 24 Hope Street.
He m. Maria/Marion, b. c. 1842, Moffat, Dumbrieshire. Children:
- Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1868, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. At home in 1871 and 1881. 1901 census in Glasgow Springburn,
Lanarkshire, with his wife, Herlen A., b. c. 1869, Glasgow. Daughter:
- Jean A. Prentice, b. c. 1900, Glasgow. At home in 1901.
- Mary Prentice, dau., b. c 1870, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. At home in 1871, indexed as "Alexander." At home in 1881 and 1891.
- Robert Prentice, b. c. 1873, Partick. Lanarkshire. At home in Hamilton in 1881, 1891 and 1901.
- Janet Prentice, b. c. 1875, Partick. Lanarkshire. At home in Hamilton in 1881 and 1891.
- David Prentice, b. c. 1877, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. At home in 1881 and 1891. Not in 1901 census.

It seems like a good bet that Alexander Prentice is the Alexander Prentice shown in Glasgow christening records as chr. 6 Dec 1807, Dalziel, son of David Prentice and Janet Lightbody.
