William Alexander Prentice of NY and MS
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2008 and Revised 20 Dec 2014

Note: This article replaces our earlier Summer 1997 article about William Prentice of NY and MS and and Spring 2006 article about William Prentice of NY and MS .

We have been working with Marjorie Baxter and Amy Prentice in trying to trace their Prentice roots. With their help, and the kind help of James T. Dunnam's email of 2 Jan 2006, here is what we have so far:

1. William Alexander Prentice was b. c. 1814 in NY. At some date before 1838, William moved to Mississippi. No other Prentice family is shown in the MS 1830 and 1840 census, so it may be that William's parents and siblings had remained in NY, or, conceivably, were living in another state when William moved to MS. He died in August 1849 in Greene Co., MS (perhaps Leakesville where his son, James, is shown in 1860) of consumption when he was only about 35 years of age.

William m. Mary Rainey/Raney on 9 Nov 1838 in Hinds Co., MS. She was b. c. 1823, perhaps in Hinds Co., MS. A 2005 search of Ancestry.com does not disclose the identity of her parents. More about Amy's murder can be found in the following article:

Sun Herald (Biloxi, MS) - Wednesday, September 16, 2015: Amy Prentiss and Ethan Schmidt: Police: No 'love triangle' between Gautier woman, Delta State professor killed

What prompted Delta State University professor Shannon Lamb to shoot and kill his girlfriend in Gautier, then drive to the university and shoot a fellow professor there remains under investigation, though authorities said Tuesday they have ruled out any possibility of a romantic or other link between the two who were killed.

"There is one thing I want to make clear," Cleveland Police Chief Charles "Buster" Bingham said Tuesday, noting some other media had indicated there was a romantic link between the man and woman. "We are not looking at a love triangle. We have no evidence to substantiate that."

On Monday morning, Delta State professor Shannon Lamb, 45, called Gautier police to say he had shot to death his live-in girlfriend, Amy Prentiss, 40, at their Santa Cruz Street home Sunday. Then he expressed concern over the family hound dog still at the home, telling police she was "very sweet" and probably "upset." The dog is now with Prentiss' daughter.

Police believe Lamb shot and killed Prentiss on Sunday night and called from Delta State on Monday morning to report it. There, Lamb shot and killed Delta State history professor Ethan Schmidt, 39, in his office. Schmidt had been shot three times with a .38-caliber handgun, in the neck, cheek and right arm, authorities said, while he was either entering or leaving his office. Schmidt had a book bag on his shoulder.

Lamb later shot and killed himself in the driveway of a home in Greenville after police there caught up with him.

Bingham said investigators have been told Lamb and Schmidt didn't get along. "But I'm not going to say they didn't get along because we've also had people saying they did get along," he said. "You have to understand that even though everything happened (at the university) Monday, it is still early in the investigation. We aren't going to make any assumptions. We are not going to make a motive declaration. We are looking at every possibility."

Tenure question. Relatives of Prentiss said Lamb didn't like Schmidt because he blamed the professor for Lamb's failure to get tenure at the university after he earned a doctorate in education in the spring. According to Delta State, however, a change in the university's policy was actually the reason Lamb was not automatically given tenure upon receiving his doctorate.

Lamb, who started working at the university in 2009 and taught geography and education, was teaching two online classes this year. His one classroom course had been canceled.

Relatives of Prentiss said Lamb didn't like Schmidt. "My daughter heard him say he didn't like Schmidt," said Shawn O'Steen, Prentiss' ex-husband. "He thought that the man stopped him from getting tenure or something like that and it wasn't even the case."

O'Steen, who had remained good friends with Prentiss over the 15 years since their divorce, said their daughter, Abigail, is "absolutely distraught" over her mother's death. "They were best friends," he said. "They could have been sisters."

How they met. Prentiss and Lamb got together after they met at a fair in Biloxi in 2012. Prentiss' daughter is a musician and she was performing there, as was Lamb, who was playing guitar and singing the blues. "He seemed like a really nice guy at first," O'Steen said. But Lamb had some personal issues, O'Steen said, and sometimes became very agitated. "He could be violent and abusive," he said. "Abigail was afraid for her mother."

Lamb and Prentiss were together off and on over the years. They had broken up earlier this year, O'Steen said, then gotten back together recently. Prentiss and Lamb had been living for about a month at the Gautier home where Prentiss died. O'Steen said he'd done the survey work for the home for them, but still was concerned over Prentiss' relationship with Lamb because of his daughter's reaction. "Abigail was very distressed when they got back together," he said. "Now, this has happened and for what reason? It just doesn't make sense." 'This was meaningless'

Prentiss was valedictorian of Perry High School when she graduated in 1993. She studied nursing and became a registered nurse. She also had a master's degree in entertainment management, something O'Steen said she got so she could help their daughter in her music career.

The mother and daughter often traveled together, he said, and Prentiss financed their daughter's first album at a Nashville recording studio. "They did absolutely everything together," he said. "She would take Abigail to concerts across the country. She even took her to the Grammys in 2012." They had also been in a beauty pageant together. Prentiss was also active in animal rescue and volunteered in the community.

O'Steen said he was just "dumbfounded" when he first learned Prentiss had been shot to death. "My daughter called me around 1 o'clock (Monday)," he said. "Then I had to go to her parents' home to tell them. When someone is murdered, it's terrible, but when someone is murdered and then the person kills themselves, it's like, 'Why did this happen?' Why didn't the man just kill himself? Why did he have to take someone away? This is my daughter's mother. He stole her away from my daughter. And her parents, he took her from them, too. It would almost make you feel better if you could understand why.

"He took away a valued citizen who contributed positively to the community and was a good mother and a good daughter as well as a good friend to a lot of people. This was meaningless."

Who are William Alexander Prentice's Parents?

It seems likely William's parents are among the approximately 30 Prentice families appearing in the NY 1810 census. His father may be named Alexander, William's middle name, or perhaps James or John, the names of William's sons. We started down that list to see who had children under 10 years of age in 1920 in the hope that it would narrow down the possibilities. Unfortunately that approach didn't work out. Virtually every one of those families had at least 1 child under 10 in 1920 and some had 2 or 3 under 10.

It appears that the only way to identify William's parents is from the Mississippi end. We know that at some date before 1838, William, with or without his family, moved to Mississippi. He m. Mary Rainey/Raney on 9 Nov 1838 in Hinds Co., MS. He also appears a year and a half later in the 1840 Hinds Co., MS census as William A. Prentiss. He died in August 1849 in Greene Co., MS of consumption.

We suggest the following approach:

  1. Go to Hinds County and check the marriage records for William's marriage and possible marriages of any possible siblings. A marriage will almost certainly give the names of his parents and perhaps his specific place of birth. Also check property Deeds since those sometimes refer to the buyer's previous place of residence.

  2. Go to Greene County and search the death records and burial records. Again, they will likely give the names of his parents and perhaps his specific place of birth. Also check Deeds for the same reason.

  3. In both counties check at the local and county libraries which often contain county histories containing biographical information about early settlers. If one is fortunate, the library may also have an old August 1849 newspaper containing his obituary which may have helpful information. Also, check the local genealogical libraries and societies there.

  4. It may also be useful to do the same searches for each of the 4 children of William since their documents and biographies may contain information about William.
