Lucy Laura Prentice of Grand Forks, North Dakota

Lucy Laura Prentice of Grand Forks, North Dakota
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2005 and Revised 20 Jun 2011

We found the following information posted by Dolores Hemphill on 5 Oct 2001 in a query at Genealogy.com but have been unable to contact her:

1. Lucy Laura Prentice was b. c. 1883 at an unknown location and d. before 1918. She is called "of Grand Forks, ND" as of the estimated 1905 date of her marriage.

She m. John Bacon c. 1905, perhaps in Grand Forks, ND. He was b. c. 1862 "in the US." They are said to be living in "Grand Forks, ND early 1900s" and definitely 1907. Apparently they moved to Alberta in Canada. They had 2 children:

  1. Lillian Bacon b, c. 1905-6, ND (per 1920 census)
  2. Charles Percy Bacon, b. 20 Jul 1907, Grand Forks, ND.

Lillian and Charles were placed in North Dakota Children's Home Society by John after Lucy died. They were were adopted in 1918 and took the surname Hackett. They appear in the 1920 census in Fargo Ward 6, Cass Co., ND, in the home of Erastus Hackett, b. c. 1851, PA, and his wife, Carrie Hackett, b. c. 1862, NY. Their ages are such that they might be the children's maternal grandmother.

Reportedly, John later remarried and had another family but it is unclear whether that was in Alberta or whether he returned to the US.

Who are Lucy Laura Prentice's Parents?

All we know, for now, is that there was no male Prentice shown in the 1900 census as living in Grand Forks, ND. Nor do John Bacon and his wife and children appear in the 1910 ND census.

There was a John Bacon in the 1900 Grand Forks census; he was b. Jun 1865 in IA; his wife was Calista, b. Jun 1867 in IA. No son named John was shown living at home in 1900. It might be that Calista died and that John m., as a 2nd wife, Lucy Laura Prentice.

The 1910 Grand Forks census shows a Katy Prentice, b. c. 1856, Canada with 3 children whose absent father was b. in NY:

  1. (illegible) Prentice, dau., b. c. 1892, ND.
  2. Alice Prentice, b. c. 1894, ND.
  3. Raymond Prentice, b. c. 1897, ND. He does not appear in the 1920 or 1930 census.

Katy and her husband do not appear in the earlier 1900 census in ND as one would expect since their children were b. in the 1890s in ND and were perhaps missed.
