1. Joseph Prentice was b. c. 1851 in Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England. He appears in the 1881 census living at 5 House 9 Court Digbeth, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England, as a General Labourer, with his wife and family. They also appear in the 1891 and 1901 census in Deritend, Aston, Warwickshire where he is shown as a Brick laborer.

  3. Emma Prentice, b. c. 1871, Birmingham, Warwick. At home in 1891 where she is called Emma Smith. She does not appear at home in the 1901 census, but living with Joseph and his family is:

  1. Mary Roberts, granddaughter, b. c. 1895, Birmingham.
  2. Lily Priest, granddaughter, age unclear, b. Birmingham.

Who are Joseph Prentice's Parents?

It seems likely that Joseph Prentice may be the Joseph Prentice who appears in the 1861 census in Stratford on Avon, Old Stratford Civil Parish, Warwichshire, as b. c. 1853, Stratford, Warwickshire, son of John Prentice and his wife, Mary A., b. c. 1825, Moreton in Marsh, Gloucestershire. John does not appear in the 1861 census, but their children shown are:

  1. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1851, Stratford, Warwickshire
  2. Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1853, Old Stratford, Warwickshire
  3. Emma Prentice, b. c. 1858, Old Stratford, Warwickshire.

Mary A. may be the Mary Ann Prentice who appears, without her husband, in the following 1851 census entry:

Head: PRENTICE, Mary Ann Neighbors 331673 Name Relationship Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace Mary Ann PRENTICE Head W 26 [b. c. 1825] F Labourer Moreton in The Marsh-Gloucestershire William PRENTICE Son - 5 M --- Moreton in The Marsh-Gloucestershire Elizabeth PRENTICE Daur - 10m F --- Stratford on Avon-Warwickshire Address: Scholars Lane, Stratford on Avon Census Place: (Old Stratford) Stratford On Avon Stratford on A

The National Burial Index in England shows that a Sarah Prentice, d. in Moreton in Marsh at the age of 1 week.

Who is the John Prentice who m. Mary A. and had Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1851 in Stratford on Avon, Warwickshire, England. We note that the 1841 census shows a John Prentice, b. c. 1825 in Old Stratford, Warwickshire. He would be about 26 when Joseph was b. in Stratford
