John Prentice of Sheffield, Yorkshire, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2006 and Revised 29 Nov 2006

1. John Prentice may have been b. c. 1780-1795, perhaps in, or near, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England where his son, Mark, was chr. in 1815.

He m. Elizabeth. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Mark Prentice, chr. 27 Dec 1815, Cathedral St. Peter, Sheffield, Yorkshire. . . . . . . [2]

2. Mark Prentice was b. c. 1813-1816, Sheffield, Yorkshire, England (per 1841 and 1851 census). He appears in the 1841 and 1851 Sheffield census records with his wife and family. Also living with the family in 1851 was Sarah Stones, called Mark's mother-in-law. Mark does not appear in the 1861 and later census; his wife is called a Widow in the 1871 census.

He m. Hannah (Stones?), b. c. 1803-1811, Sheffield, Yorkshire. She may, or may not, be the Sarah Prentice shown in the 1871 census in Sheffield as a Widow and Boarder. Known children:

  1. Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1835, Sheffield, Yorkshire. Not home in1841 but home in 1851.
  2. John Prentice, b. c. 1836, Yorkshire. At home in 1841.
  3. George Prentice, b. c. 1839, Yorkshire. At home in 1841.
  4. Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1840, Yorkshire. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
  5. Ann Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1844, Sheffield, Yorkshire. At home in 1851.

3. Samuel Prentice, b. c. 1840, Yorkshire. At home in 1841 and 1851. He is likely the Samuel Prentice shown in the 1881 amd 1891 Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire, census as b. c. 1842, Sheffield. He may be deceased by 1901 as his wife, Louisa, is then shown as the head of the family, or he may be the Samuel Prentice shown in the 1901 census as an "Inmate" in the District Ecclesall Union Workhouse; for more on that subject, see Ecclesall Bierlow, West Riding of Yorkshire .

He m. Louisa, b. c. 1845, Sheffield. 1901 census in Ecclesall Bierlow. Children per 1891 census:

  1. Louisa Calah, step-daughter, b. c. 1872, Sheffield, Yorkshire. At home in 1891.
  2. Matthew H. Calah, step-son, b. c. 1877, Sheffield, Yorkshire. At home in 1891.
  3. Joseph Prentice, b. c. 1882, Sheffield, Yorkshire. At home in 1891 and 1901.
  4. Hannah E. Prentice, b. c. 1887, Sheffield, Yorkshire. At home in 1891 and 190l.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

A check of the 1841 census shows a John Prentice, b. c. 1781 in Yorkshire, but his wife's name is Hannah, not Elizabeth.
