John Prentice of Holland and Los Angeles, CA

John Prentice of Holland and Los Angeles, CA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2006 and Revised 5 Apr 2005

1. John Prentice was b. c. 1853 in Holland. He appears in the 1920 census in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA at the age of 67. Both of his parents are shown in the census record as having been born in Holland. The census record also indicates that John emigrated to the U. S. in 1864 at the age of about 11 years.

Appearing with John in the 1920 census is his wife, Mary, b. c. 1865 in Germany, as were both of her parents. The census record appears to indicate that she emigrated to the U. S. in 1890 at the age of 25.

No children are shown, but their ages are such that any children would have left home by 1920.

Who are the Parents of John Prentice?

If John emigrated in 1864, one would expect to find him in prior census records. However, the only John Prentice, born in Holland, appears in the 1880 Grand Rapids census; he is shown as b. c. 1856 (not 1853) in Holland and his wife is named Annie, b. c. 1855 in NY. None appear in the 1900 or 1910 census.

With a single exception, census record for the period 1880 through 1930 do not indicate any other Prentices born in Holland of an age appropriate to be his parents. The exception is Hannah Prentice, b. c. 1831 who appears in the 1880 Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MN census and who is the subject of an article at E. H. Prentice of Holland and MN . For Hannah to be John's mother, she would have had to be about 18 years of age when John was born.
