James Prentice of Scotland, Alabama and Illinois

James Prentice of Scotland, Alabama and Illinois
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2006 and Revised 13 Dec 2013

Introduction: This article includes information originally contained in our Fall 2004 article about Robert B. Prentice of Summit Co., IL.

1. James Prentice was b. Nov 1849 in Scotland, as were both of his parents. He appears in the 1880 census in Montgomery, Montgomery Co., AL, with his wife and family. He is tentatively inferred to be the James S. (Stuart?) Prentice who appears in the 1910 census in Coventry, Summit Co., OH, and 1920 census in Barberton, Summit Co., OH, with his wife, Elizabeth, his son

He m. Elizabeth, b. Jul 1848, Scotland, as were both of her parents. They had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Robert Prentice, b. Oct 1880, IL. . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. (tentatively) John Prentice, b. c. 1874, New Jersey. He appears in the 1920 census in Bayonne, Hudson Co., NJ, as a widower with his son:
    1. James Stuart Prentice, b. c. 1908, OH. He may have been named after his grandfather, James S. Prentice, #1, above. He seems to be the James S. Prentice, grandson of the James S. Prentice shown the 1910 census in #1, above. James is called John's son in he 1920 census in Bayonne, Hudson Co., NJ. Given the 1920 Bayonne residence, James is probably the same person as James Prentice, shown in the 1940 census in Bayonne with his wife, Regina, b. c. 1911, NJ, with no children shown.

John appears in the 1940 census still as a widower and still in Bayonne Hudson Co., NJ. He is there shown with a 4 year college education and his occupation is a Superintendent in a manufacturing company.

2. Robert Prentice, b. Oct 1880, IL. Although there is a small difference in his birth year, he is tentatively inferred to be the same person as the Robert B. Prentice who appears in 1910 census in Coventry, Summit Co., OH, as b. c. 1881-82, IL, son of James S. Prentice, b. c. 1851, "Scot English" and his wife, Elizabeth, b. c. 1850, "Scot English." as were both of their parents.

Also shown in that 1910 census was James S. Prentice, b. c. 1907, OH, and called a grandson of Robert and Elizabeth.

Robert is also inferred to be the same Robert B. Prentice who appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Barberton Ward 2, Summit Co., OHas b. c. 1885 in IL (with both parents born in Scotland), with his wife, Viola, b. c. 1893, MO, and children:

  1. Charlotte O. Prentice, b. c. 1917, OH. 1930 and 1940 at home in Barberton.
  2. Jean E. Prentice, dau., b. c. 1918, OH. 1930 and 1940 at home in Barberton.

A check of the SSDI was inconclusive because the name is common, but no person of that name obtained his SS# in OH or died in OH.

Viola's maiden surname may have been "Stumpf" because living with the family in the 1940 census was Julia O. Stumpf, b. c. 1869 in MO, called a mother-in-law
