James Prentice of Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2005 and Revised 20 Mar 2015

This an updating of our earlier Spring 2000 article about Archibald Prentice of Cambusnethan .

1. James Prentice was likely b. c. 1739 and is called "of Longmuir, Lanark, Scotland" (per IGI). It is unclear where "Longmuir, Lanark" is located. It may refer to a present day dairy farm which lies just south of Middlefield which is about 4 to 5 miles south of Lesmahagow and perhaps 35 miles SE of Glasgow.

He m. Jean Smellie. Her date of birth is unclear. One IGI entry says she was b. 1746, Cambusnethan, Lanark. Scotland . She was the dau. of William Smellie and Janet Nielson. However, the IGI shows that William and Janet had a daugher, Jean Smellie, chr. 28 May 1750 and d. 4 Dec 1799 (per IGI). Either the 1st daughter died before 1750, or the christening of the 1746 daughter occurred in 1750. Children (per IGI)

  1. Margaret Prentice, b. 16 Jun 1765, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
  2. John Prentice, b. 3 Apr 1767, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He may, or may not, be the John Prentice who m. Janet Renwick on 16 Apr 1791 in Cambusnethan. No children appear in the IGI or Glasgow Records.
  3. Marion/Marrion Prentice, chr. 30 Oct 1768, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
  4. James Prentice, b. 14 Aug 1771, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He may, or may not, be the James Prentice who m. Isobel Baillie on 7 Nov 1789 in Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. See our Spring 2003 article about John Prentice and Euphemia Scott of Carluke .
  5. William Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1773, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland
  6. Thomas Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1776, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  7. Robert Prentice, b. 9 May 1778, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. He is not the Robert Prentice who m. Catharine Mann on 14 May 1796 in Cambusnethan.
  8. David Prentice, b. 25 Jul 1779, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. Not in 1841, 1851, or 1861 census.

2. Thomas Prentice, b. 4 Jul 1776, Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland. Although additional confirmation is needed, he might be the Thomas Prentice who m. Jean Cunningham on 19 Apr 1793, Cambusnethan (per Glasgow Records). She may, or may not, be the Jean Cunningham shown in the IGI as chr. 26 Nov 1769 in Cambusnethan, daughter of John Cunningham and Margaret Cooper. Although none are shown in the IGI and Glasgow Records, Thomas and Jean had 1 or more children, including:

  1. Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1806-7, Cambusnethan. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

3. Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1806-7, Cambusnethan and d. in Overtown (per Christine Hadden, email, 6 Nov 2005). He appears in the 1861 census of Cambusnethan, Scotland contained in our Winter 1999 issue, which shows the family of Archibald Prentice, a laborer living in Wishaw. At the time of his marriage, he was a Railway Wagon Inspector

He m. Janet Clarkson, b. c. 1810-1811, Cambusnethan, (per Mary Lou Schaff, email, 4 Nov 2005, citing his son's marriage certificate). Janet also appears in the 1861 census.

It seems probable that Archibald and Janet are the persons buried in the Cambusnethan Churchyard at Kirk Road/Greenhead Road, Wishaw. An obelisk stone there reads:

    - Archibald Prentice died 22nd December 1882 aged 77 years (b. c. 1805),
    - wife Janet Clarkson died 23rd February 1890 aged 81 years.
    - Daughter Jane died 1st May 1858 aged 3 years,
    - son Thomas, merchant, Overtown, died 17th May 1912 aged 80 years,
    - (wife) Elizabeth Hamilton died 22nd June 1874 aged 42 years.

Children of Archibald and Janet (per 1861 census and obelisk):

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1832, Merchant in Overton, and d. 17 May 1912, Age 80 (per obelisk, above). His apparent wife may be Elizabeth Hamilton, shown on the obelisk as b. c. 1832 and d. 22 Jun 1874 at the age of 42 years.
  2. James Prentice, b. 1835, Carluke. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

  3. John Prentice, b. c. 1840, Cambusnethan (per 1851 Cambusnethan census). He appears in the 1871 census with his wife, Margaret, b. c. 1843, Cambusnethan. They had 1 or more children, including:

    1. Archibald Prentice was b. c. 1870 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He appears in the 1871 census with his parents, John Prentice (b. c. 1839, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire) and Margaret (b. c. 1843, Cambusnethan). Archibald later appears in the 1901 census in Edinburgh St. Cuthberts, Midlothian, Scotland, with his wife and family.

Archibald emigrated to Toronto, Canada at some date before 29 Feb 1904.

Archibald m. Annie Prentice, b. c. 1864, Wishaw, Lanarkshire. Ellis Island records show that his Ammoe departed her home in Edinburgh, Scotland and sailed out of Glasgow on the "Numidian" to the Port of New York, arriving on 29 Feb 1904. Her destination was Toronto, Canada, to join her husband at 4 Victoria St., Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Children accompanying her were:

      1. Jean/Jeanie Prentice, b. c. 1893, Edinburgh, Scotland. At home in 1901.
      2. William/Willie Prentice, b. c. 1895, Edinburgh, Scotland. At home in 1901.
      3. Margaret/Maggie Prentice, b. c. 1900, Edinburgh, Scotland. At home in 1901.
      4. Archibald/Archie Prentice, b. c. 1902, Edinburgh, Scotland. At home in 1901.

  4. Archibald Prentice, b. c. 1848-49, Overton, Lanark (per 1861 census). . . . . . . . . . . [5]

  5. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1855 and d. 1 May 1858, age 3 (per obelisk, above)

4. James Prentice, b. 1835, Carluke.

He m. Grace Black on 16 Jun 1861, Newarthill Free Church. She was b. 1843, Carluke. Both bur. in Cambusnethan Cemetery per Robert Dalgleish, email, 24 Feb 2012. 1881 census in Cambusnethan. 1891, 1901 in Carluke. Children per census:

  1. Margaret/Maggie Prentice, b. c. 1862, Cambusnethan. 1881, 1891, 1901 at home.

    1. James Prentice, b. c. 1890, Carluke. 1891 at home.
It is unclear whether he is the same person as the James Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Barrhead and Levern, living on Old Crookston Farm, Renfrewshire, as b. c. 1865, Cambusnethan, with his wife, Annie, b. c. 1867, Carluke, and children:

  3. Thomas Black Prentice, b. c. 1866, Overtown, Lanarkshire, and d. 1944. 1881 at home. Robert Dalgleish's email of 16 Feb 2012 relates that Thomas, his great grandfather was the Reverend Thomas Black Prentice, a minister in Jamaica for 50 years at Stirling and Little London Savanna La Mar. In the 1901 church list he is listed as the presbyterian minister for friendship at Stirling and Little London. Both Thomas and his wife are buried together in Jamaica.

He m. Isabella Brownlie Dick on 24 Apr 1894, United Presbyterian Church, Carluke, Scotland (per RobertDalgleish, email, 16 Feb 2011). She was b. c. 1865, Carluke, and d. 1934. She was living in Carluke in the 1891 Carluke census prior to her marriage. In Jamaica, their address was Bloomingdale West Moreland Savanna La Mar, which may have been a plantation. Children per Robert Dalgleish, email, 24 Feb 2012:

      1. Edna Prentice, b. c. 1914 age 98 in 2012, and living in Glenrothes.

Thomas Black Prentice appears in the death legal notice set out in Appendix A .

  4. John Prentice, b. c. 1869, Overtown, Lanarkshire. 1881 at home. Not in 1891 or 1901 census. But see his sister, Jessie, below.
  5. James Prentice, b. c. 1873, Overtown, Lanarkshire. 1881, 1891 at home. In 1901 census as a Hotel Keeper in Tranent, East Lothian, with his wife, Christina, b. c. 1870, Gorebridge, Midlothian, and daughter:

  6. Jessie Prentice, dau., b. c. 1875, Overtown, Lanarkshire. 1881, 1891 at home. She is likely the Jessie W. Prentice shown in the 1901 census in Dunfermline, Fife, as b. c. 1875, Cambusnethan living with a brother, John W. Prentice, b. c. 1871, Cambusnethan.

    Who are James Prentice's Parents?

A search of the IGI and Glasgow Records does not identify the parents of any James Prentice b. c. 1739 "of Longmuir." We did, however, find in Glasgow Records a James Prentice, chr. 19 Aug 1739 in Whitburn, Lanark, son of John Prentice and Jean Wardrobe. Whether this is the correct James Prentice is unclear. For their family, see our Spring 2000 article about Whitburn, Scotland, Prentice Vital Records .
