James O. Prentice of Ipswich
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2005 and Revised 12 Jun 2008

Update of 12 Jun 2008: Oliver Prentice, #1 below, is No. 16.3(i) in our Fall 2000 article about The Prentices of Palgrave, Bungay and Stowmarket, England and Pennsylvania . That article now replaces this article.

The following family information is based on information contained in the record of Oliver Prentice who died in WW I and on census records. The relationships described are, in part, only tentative and further investigation is needed for confirmation.

1. Oliver Prentice was b. c. 1821, Stowmarket, Suffolk. He appears in the 1851 census with his wife and family. Also shown is his sister, Mary Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1836, Stowmarket, Suffolk.

He m. Mary, b. c. 1827, Wrentham, Suffolk. Children:

  1. James Oliver Prentice, b. c. 1850. Ipswich, Suffolk. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  2. Mary Retcher Prentice, b. c. 1851, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1851.

    2. James Oliver Prentice, b. c. 1850. Ipswich, Suffolk (per 1851 census). He appears in the 1881 census in Ipswich St Helen, Suffolk with his wife, and family. It is tentatively inferred, subject to further investigation, that he is the same person as "Oliver Prentice," referred to in the death record of the Oliver Prentice who d. in WW I (see #2, below) since James did have a son named Oliver whose birth year matched.

He m. Louisa J., b. c. 1860, Ipswich. Children of James O. Prentice and Louisa:

    1. Oliver Prentice, b. c. 1880, Ipswich, Suffolk. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]
    2. Harold Prentice, b. c. 1881, Ipswich, Suffolk. Not home in 1901. Shown as a Boarder in the 1901 census in Brighton, Sussex.
    3. Mary L. Prentice, b. c. 1884, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1891 and 1901.
    4. Amy Prentice, b. c. 1886, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1891 and 1901.

    3. Oliver Prentice, b. c. 1880, Ipswich, Suffolk. At home in 1881, 1891 and 1901 census. He is likely the same person as Oliver Prentice who d. in WW I on 27 Mar 1918. Military death records describe him as b. c. 1880, a 2nd Lt. in the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), "son of the late Oliver Prentice" and Mrs. Prentice of 351 Nacton Rd., Ipswich. Burial information given is: Commonwealth War Dead, Panel 85 and 86, Pozieres Memorial, a cemetery in Pozieres, France. More information on that cemetery can be found on Google.
