George Prentice of Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2006 and Revised 1 Nov 2009

Update of 1 Nov 2009: George Prentice is George Prentice of Rutherglen, Scotland, He appears in our Summer 2005 article of that name. That article now replaces this article.

1. George Prentice was b. in Scotland (per 1930 census for his son, James) and perhaps b. c. 1835-1850. In 1872 he was living in Woodside, Lanarkshire, Scotland, when his son, James, was born. Woodside apparently is that community that lies about 25 km SE of Glasgow and perhaps 1 km south of Crossford.

He m. Elizabeth. She also was b. in Scotland (per 1930 census for her son, James). We searched the 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901 census and no George Prentice appears with a wife named Elizabeth. It is not yet known whether they emigrated to the United States. George and Elizabeth had 1 or more children, including:

  1. James Johnson Prentice was b. Mar 1872 in Scotland. . . . . . . . [2]

2. James Johnson Prentice was b. Mar 1872 in Woodside, Lanarkshire, Scotland, which apparently is that community that lies about 25 km SE of Glasgow and perhaps 1 km south of Crossford. James d. 25 Mar 1935 in Amigo, Raleigh Co., WV. Place of Burial was Bishop, WV. His place of residence at that time was Bishop Tazewell Co., WV. He was a Miner. The "Informant" on James's Death Certificate was William Prentice, probably a brother or son.

James does not in the 1881 or 1891 Scotland census, but does appear in the 1901 Scotland census in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, as a Coal Miner living at 121 Eddlewood Rows with his wife and family. James and his wife and family emigrated to the U.S. in 1904 according to the 1930 census when he would have been about 32 years of age.

He is likely the James Prentice who appears in the 1910 census on Sewell Mtn., Fayette Co., WV and almost certainly the James Prentice who appears in the 1920 census in Clear Fork, Raleigh Co., WV where is birth date is given as c. 1873. Still later, they appear in the 1930 census in Big Creek, McDowell Co., WV.

He m. Charlotte Weis(?). She is probably the Charlotte who appears in the 1910 census on Sewell Mtn., Fayette Co., WV with her husband, James, although his birth date is given there as c. 1850. She was living at the time of James' death in 1935. Children per 1910 census:

  1. William Prentice, b. 24 Apr 1898, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [3]

  2. Emily Prentice, b. c. 1902, Scotland. Not home in 1920 or 1930.
  3. James Prentice, b. c. 1907, WV. At home in 1920. He appears, unmarried, in the 1930 census in Weston, Lerwis Co., WV. Unclear whether in SSDI. He may be the James Prentice shown in WV Prentice Deaths as b. c. 1908 and d. 21 Jan 1934 in Lewis Co., WV.
  4. Frederick "Freddie" Prentice, b. c. 1912, WV. At home in 1920 and 1930. Unclear whether in SSDI.
  5. Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1919, WV. At home in 1920 and 1930..

3. William Prentice, b. 24 Apr 1898, Scotland, and d. Dec 1981 in Beckley, Raleigh Co., WV (per SSDI). At home in 1920. Not home in 1930. He appears in the 1930 census in Browns Creek, McDowell Co., WV with his wife and family.

He m. Anna, b. c. 1903, Scotland. Children per 1930 census.

  1. James Prentice, b. c. 1923, WV. Unclear whether in SSDI. He might be the James F. Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 7 Feb 1920 and who d. 13 Sep 1992 in Okeechobee, Okeechobee Co., FL. The SSDI also shows a James W. Prentice who was b. 24 Dec 1920 and who d. 4 Sep 1999 in Brent, Bibb Co., AL.

  2. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1925, WV. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [4]

  3. Margaret Prentice, b. c. 1927, WV

4. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1925, WV. At home in the 1930 census in Browns Creek, McDowell Co., WV.

He m. Mary. The Kansas City Star of 9 Oct 1992 has an obituary mentioning Thomas Prentice and his wife, Mary Their children include:

  1. Betty S. Prentice, b. c. 1959. She d. in east Kansas City on 7 Oct 1992, at Independence Regional Health Center. Burial in Floral Hills Cemetery. She attended the National Career Institute. She was a member of the Kansas City Baptist Temple. She m. Jeff C. Baldwin of Avondale in Clay County. She also had a son, perhaps as a single mother, named:

    1. Jeff Prentice.

  2. William Blaine Prentice, Kansas City.

  3. Kathy Prentice who m. Mr. Cowan, Kansas City.

  4. Barbara A. Prentice who m. Mr. Kriegh, Raytown.

Who are George Prentice and Elizabeth?

The only clue we have so far is that George, b. c. 1840-50 in Scotland, may be a brother to Thomas Prentice , b. c. 1840 in Dalry, Ayr, Scotland. Both emigrated to the United States about the same time and both settled in West Virginia about the same time. Thomas also had a brother, William, who in 1907 was living in Glendale, Lawton Co., WV.
