Edwin D. Prentice of MN and Grand Forks, North Dakota

Edwin D. Prentice of MN and Grand Forks, North Dakota
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2005 and Revised 19 Jul 2010

We found the following information posted by Paul Steiner at Ancestry.com:

1. Edwin Delray Prentice was b. 2 Dec 1878 in MN and d. 25 Feb 1953 in Los Angeles Co., CA.

Curiously, he seems not to appear in the 1880, 1900 or 1910 census. Neither does he appear in the 1881 Canada census. He appears in the 1920 census as Edwin D. Prentis, a Train Master living in Williston, Williams Co., ND. He later appears in the 1930 census in Grand Forks, Grand Forks Co., ND (per 1930 census)

He m. Sophia Helland on 21 Dec 1905, Grand Forks, Herald Co., ND. She was b. 2 Nov 1873, Rice, MN, and d. 24 Apr 1971, Los Angeles CA. Both of her parents were b. in Norway (per 1920 census). She was b. 2 Nov 1873 (the 1880 census says b. c. 1880) in Rice Co., MN. An Ancestor Chart for her can be found at Ancestry.com .

It is unclear whether they had any children; none are shown in the 1930 census, but he was then 51 and she was 53 and any children may by then have left.

Living with Edwin and his wife in 1930 was a niece, Birneda(?) Larson/Larcon, b. c. 1911, WA.

Who are Edwin D. Prentice's Parents?

The only 2 clues we have so far are:

  1. The CA Death Index says that his mother's maiden name is Shuman. An entry for Prentice-Shuman does not appear in the Mar 2005 Ancestry Family Tree records.

  2. The 1920 census his father was b. in NY and mother in WI, but the 1930 census says his father was b. in English Canada and his mother in MN

There is a possibility that Edwin may be the Edward Prentiss, shown in the 1880 census in Winona, Winona Co., MN, as b. c. 1879, MN, with his father b. in NY (which corresponds to the 1920 census) and mother in WI (which corresponds to the 1920 census). The 1920 census says his father is Jas. G. Prentiss, b. c. 1853, NY, with both parents b. in Scotland. His occupation then was "Training horses." His mother was Minnie, b. c. 1857, WI, with both prents b. in Germany.
