William Prentice of Paglesham and Rawreth, Essex, England

William Prentice of Paglesham and Rawreth, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2004 and Revised 30 May 2008

Update of 20 May 2008: William Prentice appears in the 1841 census in Paglesham, Essex Co., England as the son of William Prentice (b. c. 1801, Essex) and Rebecca (b. c. 1811, Essex). He is #4 in our Spring 2003 article entitled Prentices of Canewdon, Essex, England . That article now replaces this article.

Maria Prentice brings to our attention the following family:

1. William Prentice was b. c. 1827 in Paglesham, Essex, England. He appears as an Agricultural Labourer in the 1861 census in Rawreth, Essex, with his wife, Mary, b. c. 1829, Rochford, and children:

  1. Jane Prentice, b. c. 1851, South Benfleet.
  2. William Prentice, b. c. 1854, South Benfleet
  3. David Prentice, b. c. 1856, Thundersley
  4. Eliza Pentice, b. c. 1858, Rawreth

The 1861 Rawreth census also shows an an Elizabeth Prentice listed as Living in School Cottage as a Servant, she is 12 years old and was born c. 1849, South Benfleet. It seems likely that she, too, is a daughter of William and Mary.

Who are William Prentice's Parents?

We checked ourdatabase but was not able definitely to identify the 1827 William. However, there seems like a good chance that he may be the son of William Prentice who was bap. 8 Jun 1800, Canewdon Parish Church, and d. 11 Jan 1875, in Paglesham of Bronchitis. William m. Rebecca Gray on 24 Apr 1826, Paglesham Parish Church.

The first child we shown for them is a daughter, Rebecca, b. c. 1830 in Paglesham, but it seems likely that they would have had 1 or more children between their marriage in April 1826 and 1830. That gap would be sufficient to have had a son, William, b. c. 1827. One would expect at least 1 of their children to be named William after the father.

You can find more about his family in our article at Prentices of Canewdon, Essex where William and Rebecca are #4.
