William Prentice of Stanford Rivers and Barking, Essex, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised 27 Nov 2010

Update of 2 Nov 2006: This article is now replaced by our later 2006 article entitled William Prentice of Havering and Stanford Rivers

1. William Prentice was b. c. 1828, Stanford Rivers, Essex, which lies about 3 miles SW of Chipping Ongar and perhaps 15 miles WSW of Chelmsford, Essex. Although not shown in the IGI, he appears in the 1861 census in West Ham, Essex and in the 1871 Romford, Barking, St. Margarets census as a Labourer living at 4a Union St., Barking with his wife, Mary Ann, b. c. 1829, Barking. They later appear in the 1891 census in Barking, Essex. Son per 1871 census:

  1. William Prentice, b. c. 1857-58, Barking, Essex. . . . . . . [2]

2. William Prentice was b. c. 1857-58 in Barking, Essex, England. He later appears in the 1901 Romford census with his wife, Eliza, b. c. 1858, Warby, Essex, and childen:

  1. Eliza Prentice, b. c. 1881, Barking.
  2. William Prentice, b. c. 1882, Barking.
  3. Albert Prentice, b. c. 1900, Barking, Essex.

William does not appear in the 1881 census, nor does he appear in the IGI.

Other Barking Prentices

William may, or may not, be related to the following Prentices connected with Barking:

  1. Thomas Prentice, b. c. 1809, Barking. He appears in the 1881 census living at 10 Statham Grove, Stoke Newington, London, Middlesex. No wife or children were named.
  2. William Prentice of Great Ilford, London

Who are William Prentice's Parents?

The only clues we have so far:

1. William Prentice is likely related to Elizabeth Prentice, b. c. 1826, Stanford Rivers, who appears in the 1851 Fulham, Middlesex, census as a Servant in the home of Charles and Ann Smith.

2. William Prentice was b. c. 1828, Stanford Rivers, Essex, which lies about 3 miles SW of Chipping Ongar. In our Fall 2003 issue we have an article about John Prentice of Havering, Essex . Stanford Rivers lies about 10 miles north of Havering, and the 1851 census shows John living in Stanford Rivers.

William is not shown in John's 1851 household, but John would then have been 23 and, if John's son, likely living elsewhere. Elizabeth Prentice, above, b. c. 1826, also does not appear in John's 1851 household, but in 1851 was then 25 and, if John's daughter, likely living elsewhere in 1851. We do not yet know when they moved to Stanford Rivers, but we do have confirmation that they were there as early as 1838 when their son, George, was born there.

Subject to further investigation, we tentatively conclude that William is the son of John and Ann Prentice, above.
