William James Prentice of Bermondsey, Surrey, England

William James Prentice of Bermondsey, Surrey, England
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised: 3 Mar 2011

Note:   This material was originally included in our Summer 2000 article about William Prentice of Bermondsey . By email of 2 May 2003, Kerry Prentice of Great Dunmow, Essex says that she has concluded that William James Prentice is not yet connected to that line and has requested that it be set out separately. We have done so.

In addition, Kerry Prentice's email of 7 Jun 2003 also expressed some doubt whether William James Prentice, #1 below, is her ancestor. It reads in part as follows:

"...I was unsure...the William [who was] b. 1842 (son of William Prentice , Carman, and Jane Kerridge) was...MY William ...however as I have yet to find any other William being born in the vicinity of Bermondsey around that time frame, (except William b 1838, son of Stephen Prentice & Sophia Bacon) I am loosely presuming the William b 1842 is MY William...however I do except that many births were still not registered at this time ....and it may in fact be wrong."

However, assuming that William James Prentice is her ancestor, Kerry Prentice's email of 7 Jun 2003 expressed the belief that she has now been able to identify Williams' parents in the 1851 Bermondsey, St. Pauls, census. Living at 4 Ship @ Mermaid Row, Snowfields, were William Prentice, age 55 (b. c. 1795-6) (see Prentices of Great Ilford), Potato Labourer, born in Barking, Essex, his wife, Mary Ann, age 25 (b. c. 1825-6) born in Bermondsey, and a son, William Prentice, age 11 (b. c. 1869-70), born in Bermondsey.

Fn. 1:   By email of 23 Feb 2003, Kerry Prentice describes William's participation in a religius sect known as the "Peculiar People":

I have recently found out that my GG grandparents (William Prentice b. about 1842-44 & Eliza Cook) were members of a religious sect known as the "Peculiar People" and the "Plumpsted Peculiars". I found this information from a newspaper report in 1872 regarding the death of their daughter Charlotte.

I have managed to find a book on this sect. They are now known as the Union of Evangelical Churches. However it appears that they did not baptise their children and shunned the "norm" ie refusing to allow any medical intervention including vaccination, relying on prayer only; perhaps this is why Charlotte died; she had measles. They also did not mix with others from outside the church, wore clothing very similar to the Hamish people and only married in the Churches of England due to law.

They lived very simple lives and had ordinary occupations: labourers, shoemakers, sellers of goods. I'm not sure how they work now but this was back when the Peculiar People's church was founded in 1837 in Rochford, Essex.

This religious group had no ministers or actual churches, just meeting houses; 2 in London and the rest in Essex.

I believe that Eliza became a follower after moving to Camberwell, London where one of the 2 meeting houses was located, perhaps meeting William there. Eliza came from Standon, Hertfordshire and along with many of her family members and ancestors was baptised in the Church of England, Church of St. Mary's, Standon, Hertfordshire. I can find no baptism entries of her and William's children in Hackney where they were all born. Now I'm wondering if my William's parents were part of this sect and perhaps refused registering William and siblings as it didn't become compulsory until abt 1875, hence not being able to find a William b. about 1844, Bermondsey, with a father William, who was a potato salesman.

    Best wishes,
    Kerry
