    Oberlin Herald (Nov. 26, 1896)

    A SUPPOSED SUICIDE
    Trouble Tragically Terminated
Crazed by a Quarrel, Mrs. Minnie Hatch Kills Herself w i t h a Revolover

Mrs. Minnie Hatch, wife of Charles W. Hatch, was shot at h e r home in Sherman township, nine miles northeast of Oberlin , Sunday morning. From indications the woman died instantly . Justice Parker was summoned from Oberlin and when he arrived late in the afternoon at the home of the deceased he found the body lying full length on the floor of the kitchen in a pool of clotted blood. The body lay on th e back , inclined to the right side, the left arm was folded over the breast, and her right arm was extended on the floor. The third and fourth fingers of each hand were closed; the other fingers and thumb were open. The knuckle of the index finger of the left hand was abraded.

A thirty- two revolver was lying close to the right hand, the muzzle pointing toward the head. One chamber was empty, the one on which the hammer rested. There was a bullet wound in the head at the inside corner of the right eye. The body was almost nude. The neighbors stated that the body had not been touched since they came in the early morning.

Mr. Hatch had left home Thursday night and on Friday morning took the train at Oberlin. He returned Saturday night and his story is that Sunday morning he and his wife had some words and that he charged her with infidelity and told her he should leave her. At about six she got out of bed and went into the kitchen. He heard a shot and ran into the room to find her laying there. He hurriedly put on some of his apparel and went and aroused his neighbor Aaron Biscoe's telling them that Minnie had shot herself. He had a revolver, a thirty-eight caliber and said he would kill himself with it, but he at once gave the weapon to Mrs . Briscoe when she asked for it.

Justice Parker on Monday empaneled a coroner's jury and held an inquest on the body. After a careful examination of witnesses and consideration of all testimony adduced the jury brought in a verdict that the deceased came to her death from a wound caused by a shot from a pistol held in her own hand and fired by her with suicidal intent.

The dead woman was a daughter of D. K. Dibble and was about twenty-seven years old. She had been married about ten years and leaves four children the oldest nine and the youngest only three or four months old. The husband and wife lived very unhappily together, there being frequent bickerings and contentions between them. (Transcribed from Oberlin paper by Patsy (Bixby) Parkin 19 9 9)

The following additional information appears at Ancestry.com :

According to Bill Brandenburg, on his death bed, Charles admitted to murdering his wife. Most family members believed that Charles killed her because he believed that she was having an affair with a neighbor who might have also been related by marriage. Charles sued Delancey Ewing for alienation of affections just a few months after his wife's d eath but later dropped the case.

Who are Ozias G. Prentice's Kin?

Although only speculation at this point, his rather unusual name, Ozias, suggests he may be the son of Ozias Prentis of Woodbury, CT, 419/9. However, that Ozias moved to ME and it appears that all of his children and descendants in the appropriate time frame were b. in ME.

We suggest 2 other possibilities based on Ozias Grant Prentice's b. c. 1787 in CT and d. 1855 burial in the E. Afton Cemetery, Afton, Chenango Co., NY:

    1. He might be a son of Simeon Prentice, b. 1751 in CT who was living in nearby Oxford, Chenango Co., CT in 1810. However it is unclear whether he was still living in CT when Ozias was b. c. 1787 in CT.

    2. He might be a son of Simeon's brother, Nathaniel Prentice, b. 1763 in CT, and his wife, Lucy Campbell. Nathaniel was living in Preston, CT at least until 1790 and at unknown dates later moved to Charlton in Saratoga Co., NY; Amsterdam in Schnectady Co., NY, Broadalbin in Fulton Co., NY and Attica, in Wyoming Co., NY.

That unusual name also suggests he may be related to two families appearing in the 1880 and 1900 WI census:

Family 1.

  • Ozias G. Prentice, b. c. 1847 in NY. He is almost certainly a son, or grandson, of the 1787 Ozias G. Prentice. He was living in the town of Dale and shown in the 1920 census in Outagamie County, WI with his wife, Christine Prentice, b. Jun 1847, OH, and children:
    1. Aaron Prentice, b. Apr 1870, WI. He m. Mary (b. c. 1882, Wi) and had:
      • Arnold Prentice, b. c. 1905, WI

      • Grace Prentice, b. c. 1906, WI.
    4. Martin Prentice, b. Aug 1880, WI. He appears in the 1920 Butternut, Ashland Co., WI census with his wife, Mabel, b. c. 1890 in IL, and children:
      • Howard Prentice, b. c. 1910, WI.
      • Agatha Prentice, b. c. 1916, WI.

    6. Floyd Prentice, twin, b. May 1886, WI. He appears in the 1920 Burlington, Racine Co., WI census with his wife, Rose, b. c. 1891, IL, and son:
      • Gordon Prentice, b. c. 1917, IL.
    7. Lloyd Prentice, twin, b. May 1886, WI. He m. Florence (b. c. 1895, WI). Children:
      • Rowland Prentice, b. c. 1916, WI
      • Ida Prentice, b. c. 1918, WI

Family 2.

  • George D. Prentice (so named in the 1880 Outagamie, WI census, but shown as George W. Prentice in the 1900 Outagamie, WI census, also identified as George Washington Prentice by Rose Kulin and Deborah (Nye) Corgan) b. 10 Feb 1839, Smithville, NY (per Rose Kulin). The 1880 & 1900 Dale census, combined with information from Rose Kulin, shows the following family unit:
    • George D./W. Prentice, b. c. 1840, NY
    • Lydia Francis (Paddleford) Prentice, b. 7 Jan 1843, Greene, NY (per Rose Kulin).
    • Robert W. Prentice, b. Nov 1868, WI. Robert was a rural mail carrier in Dale, Outagamie, WI. He m. Maggie/Magdalene M. and had:
      • Faye Prentice, b. Mar 1897, WI

      • Lyle Prentice, b. Oct 1898, WI
      • Daniel(?), b. c. 1901 WI
      • Pearl Prentice, b. 1904, WI
      • Robert Prentice, b. c. 1909, WI
    • Phebe E. Prentice, b. c. 1870, WI. She is probably the Ella Phoebe Prentice who Deborah Nye Corgan's email of 21 May 2000 says m. Irwin Raymond Nye: Children:
      • Gerald Prentice Nye, b. 1892 and d. 1971. Daughter:
        • Deborah Nye, b. c. 1950. She m. Mr. Corgan.

      • Irna/Irene Prentice
      • Eugene Prentice
      • Francis Prentice
      • Alice Prentice
      • Ella Maurine Prentice, b. 10 Jul 1910, Hortonville, WI and d. Feb. 1988 at Oshkosh, WI. She m. Anton Paul Plashko III on 7 Nov 1936. Requests for information on her descendants will be forwarded to Rose Kulin for response.
    • Roxanna Prentice, b. c. 1875, WI. She married Joe Seftenberg Son:
      • Chester Seftenbert. He m. Margaret "Peg" (surname unknown). Children:
        • Steven Seftenberg.
        • (dau.) Seftenberg.

Ozias and George moved from NY to WI sometime before 1869; the oldest child of each was born 1869 or later.

However, Deborah (Nye) Corgan's email of 21 May 2000 says that George's father is Virgil Prentice, b. c. 1810 in Scotland. She also says Virgil Prentice died in 1889 at the age of 79 and is buried in the Pine Grove Cemetery in Dale, WI.
