Maurice/Morris E. Prentiss of Winslow, Kennebec Co., ME
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2004 and Revised 14 Sep 2004

Update of 14 Sep 2004: . The 1930 census identifies the father of Morris E. Prentiss as Jacob Prentiss, #159 in our Prentice eBook.

1. Maurice (or Morris) E. Prentiss was b. c. 1879-1880 in ME, as was his father. He appears as "Maurice" in the 1920 and 1920 and 1930 census in Winslow, Kennebec Co., ME. No wife appears in the 1920 census and he is called widowed. In the 1930 census he appears with an apparent 2nd wife, Grace M., b. c. 1889, ME. Children, per 1920 and 1930 census:

  1. Chester Prentiss, b. c. 1902, ME. At home in 1920 but not 1930. The SSDI shows he was b. 2 Jun 1902 and d. Nov 1969 in Waterville, Kennebec Co., ME. He appears in the 1930 census in Waterville, Kennebec Co., ME with his wife, Viola A b. c. 1903, and daughter:
    1. Lois L. Prentiss, b. c. 1928, ME.
  2. Dorothy M. Prentiss, b. c. 1903 or 1907, ME. At home in 1920 but not 1930.
  3. Lyle Prentiss, b. c. 1920, ME. The SSDI shows he was b. 12 Jan 1920 and d. 26 Jan 1999 in Waterville, Kennebec Co., ME.
  4. Viola Prentiss, b. c. 1922, ME.
  5. Ethel Prentiss, b. c. 1923, ME.
  6. Vera Prentiss, b. c. 1925, ME.
  7. Kenneth Prentiss, b. c. 1927, ME.
  8. Maurice E. Prentiss Jr., b. c. 1929-30, ME.

Who are Maurice E. Prentiss' Parents?

The only clue we have so far is that Maurice lived in Winslow, Kennebec Co., ME, and that his father was also b. in ME.

Although further investigation is needed, it seems likely that he is either the son, or grandson, of Samuel A. Prentiss, b. 28 Nov 1825 ME and who was living in Winslow in 1880. We know that Samuel had at least 3 sons, Jacob and Alphonso who were old enough to be the father of Maurice.

In the 1900 census, he appears as Morris E. Prentiss, a nephew of Joseph and Ellen Prentice. Joseph is a son of Samuel A. Prentiss, above. That would be corroborative of the thought that Maurice/Morris is a son of either Jacob or Alphonse.
