Mary Prentice of Clifford Chambers, England
Spring 2003 and Revised 2 Feb 2003

Update of 2 Feb 2003:   Mary Prentice is the daughter of of Michael Prentice and Jane Bennet of Todenham. We have a separate article about the Prentices of Todenham in this Spring 2003 issue. See Footnote 1 . The information in the article will be added to that article.
Original article:

We have been working with John Hughes in tracing the ancestry of his Mary Prentice. Here is what we have so far.

1. Mary Prentice was probably b. c. 1770-76. John Hughes has provided the following information from documents from the Stratford Record office concerning Mary (Prentice) Wyatt:

  1. 1 Jan 1827: Lease of a cottage to Michael Prentice in Chapel St ER2/319&320
  2. 1837: Mary Wyatt is named as the owner of the cottage in the will of her brother Michael Prentice.
  3. 1838: Mary Wyatt sells the property in Chapel St to Edward Leyton
  4. 24 Mar 1838: Mary Wyatt serves notice on Elizabeth Prentice to quit the property in Chapel St. It is unclear who Elizabeth Prentice is.

Mary Prentice m. John Wyatt on 3 Mar 1794 in Clifford Chambers, England.

John Wyatt's birth record has not yet been located in Clifford Chambers, so he may have come from another village. On the IGI there is a John Wyatt of the correct age that was born in the village of Todenham in 1774 who may, or may not, be the same person.

Who are Mary Prentice's Parents?

John Hughes relates that he has evidence that Mary Prentice had a brother named Michael. He also suggests that Michael may have been named after his father and Jane after her mother.

John Hughes suggests that Mary Prentice may be the daughter of Michael Prentice and Jane Bennet of Todenham. We have a separate article about the Prentices of Todenham in this Spring 2003 issue.

In our Spring 1999 article about Zachariah Prentice of Brookings, SD we had identified a Mary Prentice who had married a John Wyatt at Clifton Chambers (see #12iii). We suggested there that she might be the daughter of Joseph Prentice and Hester Bumpas of Ilmington, Gloucester, but left the issue open.

In that same article we also identified a Mary Prentice who had married a John Wyatt at Clifton Chambers (see #17i). We suggested there that she might be the daughter of a different Joseph Prentice and his unknown wife of Ilmington, Gloucester, but left the issue open.

All of the locations mentioned are in close proximity: From Clifford Chambers, go SSE about 6 miles to Ilmington, and then about 4 more miles to Todenham.

Footnote 1: John Hughes' email of 1 Feb 2003 reads, in part, as follows:

"...Take a look at the following entry [for the] 1851 Gloucestershire census:
    Dwelling - Clifford Hill:

Mary Wyatt Head	widow	79	annuitant	b. Todenham
Elizabeth Cockbill GD U 18 farmers dau. Clifford C.
Jane Cockbill GD U 16 farmers dau Clifford C
Mary Trapman Serv U 14 house servant Welford
William Hopes Serv U 30 farm servant Ilmington

The above Mary was born in 1772 and in Todenham. So was Mary Prentice, daughter of Michael Prentice (verified in the parish transcript for Todenham). We know that in the 1851 census, the ages were accurate (unlike in 1841) so we can be certain of her birth date.

She is listed as a Widow and living with her Granddaughters. We already know that John Wyatt and Mary Prentice who married in Clifford chambers had a daughter named Jane who married Edmund Cockbill in 1830!!! These teenage girls in the census are Jane's daughters. So ... I believe this is clear proof that the Mary Prentice who married John Wyatt in Clifford Chambers was indeed the daughter of Michael Prentice. There are simply no other Mary Prentices who fit these facts."
