Joseph Prentiss of Mohawk, Montgomery Co., NY

Joseph Prentiss of Mohawk, Montgomery Co., NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2004 and Revised 4 May 2011

NOTE: We had originally posted this article with the thought that William Prentup/Printup was a misspelling of William Prentiss. However, reference to microfilm copies of the original census handwritten records seems to confirm that the surname was, in fact, Prentup/Printup. This article should therefore be disregarded.

The following material comes from "Obadiah Cooper, Tailor at Albany, N. Y. from 1713-1742, & His Wife, Cornelia (Gardenier) Cooper, and their Descendants" by M. Grace Wilmarth which can be found at Ancestry.com , and from Ancestry.com .

1790 Census: The 1790 household was shown as 1 male under 16, 3 males over 16, and 4 females of unspecified age. Relationship were not indicated, but likely were a mother and father with their children: 3 sons and 3 daughters.

Although only an educated guess, the 2 older boys were probably not older than about 20, which would give Joseph a birth date of b. c. 1750, give or take up to 10 years. In view of the foregoing, we can show the children as follows:

    1. Son Prentiss, b. bef. 1774
    2. Son Prentiss, b. bef. 1774
    3. Son Prentiss, b. 1774-1790
    4. Dau. Prentiss
    5. Dau. Prentiss
    6. Dau. Prentiss

Also living in Mohawk, Montgomery Co., NY in 1790 and shown in that census is William Prentup (probably Prentiss), older than 16, with a female, older than 16, and 4 slaves. William is likely brother to, Joseph Prentiss.

7. John Prentiss, b. 15 Nov 1778 in Montgomery, NY. Although further investigation is needed for confirmation, it seems likely that he is the same person as John Joseph Prentiss (spelled "Prentup") who appears in the "Obadia Cooper" genealogy, mentioned above. He appears to the the same person shown in the Ancestral File as "John Printup" (note different surname spelling), b. 15 Nov 1778 in NY and d. 26 Jul 1845 in Fonda, NY.
