By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Winter 2003 and Revised 5 Oct 2010

1. John Prentice was probably b. c. 1880-85 and perhaps in, or near, Belfast, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States at some date before 26 Jun 1910; in 1910 he lived at 4300 Cortez St., Chicago.

His wife, Lillie Graham, was b. c. 1885, Ireland. She appears on Ellis Island Records as departing the port of Londonderry and arriving in the Port of New York on 26 Jun 1910. Lillie was described at 5' 7", fair complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. Her last permanent address was Belfast, Ireland and she was shown as going to join her husband in Chicago. She identified her nearest relative as her brother, Charles Graham of Ozamon(?) St., Belfast. Children accompanying her in 1910 were:

  1. Edward Prentice, b. c. 1904, Ireland. He is probably the Edward Prentice who appears in the SSDI as b. 30 Nov 1903, obtained his SS# in IL, and d. 30 Jan 1992 in Pea Ridge, Benton Co., AR. Not in 1930 census.

  2. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1907, Ireland. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]

2. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1907, Ireland. He is probably the Alexander Prentice who appears in the SSDI as b. 16 Sep 1906, obtained his SS# in IL, and d. 1 Dec 1987 in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA. Not in 1930 census.

The 1906 Alexander Prentice m. Marie L. Belz c. 1982. She was b. 4 Jun 1922, Hastings, MN, and d. 1 May 2010, Yakima, WA. Her obituary appears in the Yakima Harold-Republic of 14 May 2010. It reads as follows:

    Marie L. (Belz) Prentice
Marie Louise Carlson Belz Prentice, 87, died May 1, 2010 at home in Yakima. Marie was born June 4, 1922 in Hastings, Minnesota, to Frank L. Carlson and Adeline Dunkel. She graduated from Hastings High School and in 1942 married Edward H. Belz in Minnesota. In 1948 they moved to Yakima where they had two children - Suzanne Marie Belz & Beverly Frances Belz. She later went to Yakima Business College and worked as a bookkeeper. Edward died in 1971.

In 1982 she retired and married Alexander Prentice, he died 5 years later in 1987. Her joys in life were traveling, playing games, and her grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Milliron (John) of Yakima and three grandchildren, Jennifer Milliron LaLonde (Edward) of Seattle, Johnny Milliron (Christine) of San Diego, CA and Jacob Berry of Fife, WA. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Brenden and Alyssa Milliron of San Diego, CA; 8 brothers, and a very special couple, Ronald and Jennifer Berry of Lakebay, WA. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, a sister, a brother, and daughter, Beverly Berry.

A celebration of Marie's life will be at a later date.

Who are John Prentice's Parents?

John Prentice may, or may not, be the John Prentice shown in the IGI as b. 22 Dec 1880 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland, son of George Prentice and Marion Rainey

Or, there is a chance that his family appears in the 1881 Tadcaster East, York, England cenus where Ann Prentice, b. c. 1856, Scotland, and called a "Seaman's Wife," is living on Commercial Street in Tadcaster with 2 sons:

  1. John Prentice, b. c. 1879, Ireland.
  2. Alexander Prentice, b. c. 1880, Scotland.
