Ida Amanda Prentice of Grafton, Worcester Co., MA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2003 and Revised 2 Feb 2009

Update of 2 Feb 2009: Ida Amanda is #162.1 in our Henry Prentice eBook. That eBook now replaces this article.

We are helping Diane Mondor in tracing her Prentice roots. Here is what we have so far:

  7. Ethel Marian Whitney, , b. 12 Mar 1910, Grafton, MA. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
  8. Sarah/Sadie Whitney, b. c. 1906, Grafton, MA. At home in 1910 census. She m. Mr. Benoit.

2. Ethel Marion Whitney, b. 12 Mar 1910, Grafton, MA and d. 27 Dec 1985.

She m. Kenneth Howe Putnam on 14 Feb 1928 by Minister Charles Hargrove. Kenneth was a laborer, and was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on 11 Oct 1908 and d. 25 Aug 1987 (per birth, marriage and death certificates). Not in 1920 or 1930 census.census.

Who are Ida Amanda Prentice's Parents?

An interesting possibility for Ida's parents appears in the 1880 census in Worcester, Worcester Co., MA. Henry Prentice was b. c. 1836 in Worcester (with both parents b. in MA). He m. Elizabeth, b. c. 1838, Worcester (with her father b. in Ireland and mother in England). He is #91.1(iii) in our Henry Prentice eBook.Their children appearing in the 1880 census were:

  1. William Prentice, b. c. 1868, Worcester. At home there in 1880.
  2. Ada Prentice, b. c. 1870, Worcester. At home there in 1880.
  3. Ida Prentice, b. c. 1870, Worcester. At home there in 1880.
  4. George Prentice, b. c. 1873, Worcester. At home there in 1880.
  5. Nellie Prentice, b. c. 1873, Worcester. At home there in 1880.

If the right family, Ida's birth year is the same and Ida named a daughter "Ada" after her twin sister.

Ida Amanda Prentice might also be a daughter of William H. and Lillian E. Prentice who appear in the 1900 Grafton census. Ida is not shown, but all of their children are in their teens and Ida just might have been married and away from home by 1900.

Interestingly, one of the children shown is Ethel A. Prentice, and Ida's daughter has the first name, Ethel, named after an aunt. And one could speculate that the "A." stands for Amanda.

Obviously that guess should be thought of as only an investigative lead and should not be relied on without further corroborating information.
