4. Harry Baker (later called Henry Baker), b. 9 Aug 1866, Needham Market, Suffolk. His birth record identifies his mother as Eliza Baker but does not name a father. Who are James Prentice's Parents?

The IGI does not have James Prentice, b. c. 1801, Needham, in its database. We do, however, have some possible clues.

  1. James may be a brother to Harriett Prentice who was b. c. 1801 in Needham. One is tempted to think that that perhaps James named a son "Harry" after a possible sister, "Harriett." Further investigation is needed.

  2. James may be a descendant of John Prentice of Needham who had children, one of whom was James Prentice, b. 18 Feb 1727, who lived in Great Bricett which is only about 5 miles SW of Needham (see map ). We are not showing that he had a son, James, b. c. 1801, but the 1727 James may have had other brothers who might have named a son, "James."

Footnote 1: Malcolm Davidson's email of 3 Mar 2010 suggests the possibility that the James Prentice who m. Martha Hearn is a different James Prentice from the James Prentice who later m. Matilda. It is a suggestion worth additional investigation. He also indicates he has not located any death record for Martha Hearn.
