Update of 26 Apr 2011: Andrew J. Prentice is a descendant of Valentine Prentice grandson, John3 Prentice. He is #311.1 in our John3 Prentice eBook. This material has now been merged into that eBook.
1. Andrew J. Prentice, b. 1840, NY, with his father b. in ME and mother in VT.
The 1890 Veterans Schedule shows that Andrew enlisted on 14 Jun 1862 as a Private in Co. D. of the 21st MI Infantry, was wounded in the left leg, and was discharged in Jun 1865. It also shows that in 1890 he was living in Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN.
He appears in the 1900 census in Dist. 9, Hamilton Co., TN with his wife and family.
He m. Phoeby A. Skyles, b. Jan 1847, TN, as were both her parents. They had 2 or more children (per IGI):
- Grover C. Prentice (erroneously indexed as "Sarver C. Prentice), b. c. 1884, TN. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . [2]
- Mary A. Prentice, b. May 1880 (1881?), GA.
2. Grover Cleveland Prentice was b. 10 Feb 1884 in Chattanoga, Hamilton Co. TN, and d. 31 Aug 1971, Oaceola Co., FL (per IGI and SSDI). He is not in the 1900 census, but does first appear in the 1910 Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., OH census, later in the 1920 Hamilton Co., TN census and still later in the 1930 Chattanooga, Hamilton Co., TN census with his wife and children.
He m. Mary Myrtle Carroll on 24 Nov 1904, Chattanoga. She was b. 9 Apr 1880 in Fayetteville, Lincoln Co., TN, and d. 19 Aug 1967 (per IGI) with her father b. in NY and mother in NC.
Children of Grover and Mary per IGI and as shown in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 census:
- James A. Prentice, b. c. 1910, TN. At home in 1930. He may, or may not, be the James A. Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 22 Aug 1909, obained his SS# in FL, and d. 7 Jan 2000 at Saint Simons Island, Glynn Co., GA)>
- Anna L. Prentice, b. 22 Oct 1913, Chattanoga, Hamilton Co., TN. At home in 1930.
- Grover Cleveland Prentice Jr., b. 3 Jun 1917, Chattanoga, and d. 29 Feb 1920.
- Edna Prentice, b. 21 Dec 1920, Chattanoga. At home in 1930.
- Robert Eugene Prentice, b. 2 Nov 1923, Chattanoga,TN, and d. 21 May 1990 at an unspecified location (per IGI & SSDI).
- William Harrell Prentice, b. 25 Jan 1926, Kissimmee, Osceola, FL, and d. 1996. At home in 1930.
It is unclear where Grover died. There is, however, a Grover Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 10 Feb 1884 who obtained his SS# in FL and d. Aug 1971 in FL.
