Edward Bumpus of England and Marshfield, MA

Edward Bumpus of England and Marshfield, MA
Summer 2003 and Revised 13 May 2003

One of the longstanding mysteries of an allied line to that of the emigrant, Valentine Prentice is the ancestry of Edward Bumpus who sailed to America aboard the "Fortune" which landed at Plymouth, MA on 10 Nov 1621, the first ship to land after the 1620 voyage of the Pilgrams aboard the "Mayflower"

Conventional wisdom seems to be that Edward Bumpus was b. c. 1600-1606 and bap. at St Bartholomew's, London. It is troubling, however, that the specific baptismal date is missing which one would one expect to see if the baptismal place is known and that there seems to be no original source document cited as authority.

Our attention was recently directed to a Bumpas website listing a number of births and christenings in England prior to that date. Working from that website, we have prepared the following tentative possible ancestry for Edward Bumpus. We emphasize, however that additional research is required because the connection, if any, between various family lines Family Lines is not yet known.

Family Line 1

1. Richard Bumpas, bap. 23 May 1593, Aston Subedge, GLS. He m. Alice Medley? and may be the father of the following children:

  1. Henry Bumpas, bap. 7 Aug 1545, Aston Subedge, GLS.
  2. Anthony Bumpas, bap. 28 May 1654, Aston Subedge, GLS.
  3. John Bumpas, bap. 12 Apr 1854, Astton Subedge, GLS (per bap. of dau., Ann).
    1. Ann Bumpasse, bap. 20 May 1612, Aston Subedge, GLS.
    2. Margaret Bumpasse, bap. 7 Dec 1613, Aston Subedge, GLS.
  4. Grysigone Bumpas, bap 8 Jan 1547, Subedge, GLS. She m. Henry Robbyns on 12 Dec 1574, Aston Subedge.
  5. William Bumpas, bap. 7 Aug 1554, Subedge, GLS and called "of Campden" at his death c. 1629-30(?).
  6. Robertus Bumpas, bap. 6 Apr 1556. Aston Subedge. He m. Joanna Medley on 25 Oct 1581 in Aston Subedge. He had 1 or more children, including:

Family Line 3

1. Thomas Bumpas, perhaps b. c. 1580-90. Wife unknown. Based on the birth dates of the children before 1605, he would not be the Thomas Bumpas bap. 7 Mar 1573 and who m. Ann Broforde(?) on 9 Jun 1605, Kemerton, unless that were a 2nd marriage. Childen:

  1. (perhaps) Frances Bumpas, bap. bap 12 Aug 1594, Cherington WAR. Her parents name is not given in the record.
