1. Clarence A. Prentis was b. 8 Jul 1906, white race, and d. Mar 1969 in Loco, Stephens Co., OK (per SSDI). He may be the same person as Clarence Prentice, b. c. 1906-7 shown in the 1910 census in Pottawatomie Co., OK and called a grandson in the home Abner Johnson.

Clarence m. Leona Blanche Baker, b. 1906, Hamilton Co., TX, and d. after 1970, OK per Ancestry.com . An Ancestor Chart for Leona can be found at Ancestry.com .

An internet posting by Belinda Pierce at Rootsweb.com seems to indicate that he married, as a first wife, Miss Folsom and had the following children:

WALTERS -- Funeral for Billie Joyce Pounds Cunningham Prentis, 73, Walters, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, Ringling, with the Rev. Mike Williams officiating.

Mrs. Prentis was born Oct. 23, 1930, in Tillman County to the late Henry Chester "Chick" and Clara Burnadette Hughes Pounds and d. Friday, July 23, 2004, at her home. Burial will be at Ringling Memorial Cemetery under direction of Alexander Funeral Home, Ringling. She grew up in the Frederick and Manitou area and married 1st Claude David Cunningham on Dec. 28, 1946, in Manitou, and had 12 children. They lived around the Manitou, Frederick, Hollister, Walters and Ardmore area until their divorce in 1973, and she returned to Ringling.

She married 2nd Marvin "Sonny" Prentis on Nov. 25, 1975, and they lived in Ringling. She was in the bar and cafe business for several years until her stroke in July 2001. After the death of her husband in November 2002, she moved to Walters. Survivors include:

Except as to those survivors surnamed Cunningham, it is unclear which of the others may be children of Marvin Prentis.

Survivors also listed in the obituary are; two sisters and a brother-in-law: Dean Timm, Chattanooga; Bobbie (her twin sister) and F.A. "Woody" Woodmore, Frederick; 26 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Who are Clarence A. Prentis' Parents?

We have a possible clue. The surname spelling, "Prentis" is rather unusual. In checking the 1900 Pottawatomie Co., OK census where Clarence, b. 8 Jul 1906, appeared in the 1910 census, we find a Paul Prentis, b. Nov 1855, Bohemia (prior to 1918 the term "Bohemia" was traditionally used for today's Czech Republic), and his wife, Jessie, b. Aug 1862 in NE. She was then only 38 and could well have had additional children, including Clarence who, in 1910, was living with his Grandfather, Abner Johnson.

Abner Johnson might be the same person as the Abner M. Johnson, white, b. c. 1854, LA, who appears in the 1920 census in Brown, Comanche Co., OK with his wife, Sarah, b. c. 1874, and children:

  1. Arthur Johnson, b. c. 1902
  2. Gladys Johnson, b. c. 1906
  3. Marvin Johnson, b. c. 1908
Note the name, Marvin, a name also given by Clarence to one of his sons. Note also that Abner Johnson does not appear to be the same person as the Abner Johnson in the 1880 LA census who is shown as b. c. 1854, LA, and whose race is shown as Black.
