Christopher Prentice of Ireland and Racine, Racine Co., WI
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2004 and Revised 28 Dec 2005

Update of 28 Dec 2005: This article has now been replaced by our Spring 2006 article about Robert Prentice of Fintona, Ireland and Racine, WI .

1. Christopher Prentice was b. c. 1900, Fintona, Ireland, and living there at the time he emigrated to the United State in 1916, at the age of 16, departing from Liverpool, England aboard the "New York" and arriving 16 Apr 1916 at the Port of New York. The ship's Manifest shows he was single and unmarried, his occupation was that of a Draper's Assistant, and that his nearest friend or relative in Ireland was Robert Prentice of Fintona, Ireland. He was described as 5" 4", dark hair and blue eyes.

Interestingly, a great many of the names on the ship's Manifest in proximity to Christopher's name, were all young people in their late teens and early 20s, none apparently accompanied by parents.

The ship's Manifest shows his "Final Destination" to be Lake Forest, IL, to visit his Uncle, William Prentice, 505 Washington Circle, Lake Forest, IL.

Neither the 1910 nor 1920 census show any Prentice living in Lake Forest, IL.

Christopher appears in the 1920 and 1930 census in Racine, Racine Co., WI where he is described as born in Northern Ireland. Shown in 1930 is his wife, Elizabeth A. Pottinger, b. c. 1902, Wisconsin. They are shown living in the home of her father, Robert Pottinger. Also shown are Christopher's children:

  1. Leona A. Prentice, b. c. 1921, WI.
  2. Margaret E. Prentice, b. c. 1925-6, WI

Christopher Prentice is likely the Christopher Prentice shown in the SSDI as b. 1 May 1900 and d. Jun 1976 in Racine, Racine Co., WI.
