Who are Thomas Prentice's Parents?

Since Thomas' oldest children were born in Glasgow, and since he was b. c. 1838, we checked the 1841 census to locate any Thomas Prentice living in Glasgow in 1842 (places of birth, other than county, were not given in 1841. The only Thomas shown living in Glasgow in 1841 was Thomas Prentice Jr., b. 22 Jan 1837, son of Thomas Prentice Sr. and Katherine McGhie (per IGI) who were then living in Glasgow St. Mungo, Lanarkshire. The 1851 census confirms that the 1837 Thomas was b. in Glasgow.

We do note that the 22 Jan 1837 birth date for Thomas differs from the 1900 US census which gives his birth date as Jun 1838.

However, just in case they are the same person, the 1837 Thomas' father, Thomas Sr., is shown by the 1851 census as b. c. 1807, Carluke, Lanarkshire. He was apparently a widower in 1851 as the name of his wife does not appear. However, in checking the IGI, it appears that he m. Katherine McGhie and that their children were:

  1. James Prentice. b. 7 Jan 1827, Old Monkland, Lanarkshire
  2. Andrew Prentice, b. 1 May 1831, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
  3. John Prentice, b. 14 Jan 1834 Glasgow, Lanarkshire
  4. Thomas Prentice, b. 22 Jan 1837, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. He m. Janet Clark on 6 Jul 1860, Rutherglen, Lanarkshire.
