We are helping Ken and Barry Prentice in tracing of their Prentice family tree which the appreciated help of Carol Linden's email of 19 Jun 2006. Here is what we have so far:

1. Robert Prentice was b. c. 1815 in Scotland, emigrated to Canada in 1852 and d. 24 Aug 1867.

He m. Mrs. Miriam Shell who was b. 1823 and d. 24 Sep 1900. She had 3 children by a prior marriage to Michael Schell

1. Caroline Schell. She m. John Wood. Children:

Robert's gravestone is located in a small community between Uxbridge and Port Perry, called Utica in Ontario. He lived in an area called Bethesda. As one goes east from Utica, there is a grave yard on the north side, Kendall Cemetery, and the stone is in the rear left corner. Children of Robert and Miriam:

Who are Robert Prentice's Parents?

Ken Prentice, reviewing LDS records, suggests that Robert's parents might be the Robert Prentice who was b. in 1815 in Larkhall, Scotland (son of John Prentice and Euphemia Scott) and who m. Agnes Peters.

However, that seems unlikely since information provided by Christine Hadden's email of April 2001 shows that the 1815 Robert, son of John, m. Elizabeth Hamilton c. 1836 and had 8 children, the last of whom was James Prentice, chr. 11 Apr 1853 at Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland which was a date after Robert's supposed 1852 emigration to Canada. See Robert and James Prentice of Dalserf in our Summer 2001 newsletter.

In addition, Ken does not indicate any family tradition that his Robert had a prior marriage and children threof.  Fn. 1.

We did note one other possibility. In reviewing the 1841, 1851 and 1861 Scotland census, we found 3 or 4 men named Robert Prentice who were b. in the appropriate time frame:

1. Robert Prentice, b. c 1816 and in 1841 lived with his wife, Elizabeth (b. c. 1816), in Culter, Lanarkshire. He does not appear in later records unless he is the same person as the Robert Prentice who appears in the 1861 census as b. c. 1816 in Carluke and in 1861 living in Dalserf.
2. Robert Prentice, b. c. 1815 in Hamilton. He does appear in the 1861 Hamilton census.
3. Robert Prentice b. c. 1817, Hamilton. He does appear in the 1861 Hamilton census.

From the foregoing, it appears that the 1841 Robert Prentice might have either emigrated before 1861 unless he is also the 1861 Robert Prentice living in Dalserf in 1861.
