Robert Prentice of Largs, Ayrs, Scotland

Robert Prentice of Largs, Ayrs, Scotland
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Fall 2001 and Revised 25 Dec 2006

We received from Ann Cossar information about the following family in her email of 16 Aug 2001. To that we have added recently available census information.

1. Robert Prentice was b. c. 1796, Scotland. He appears in the 1841 census in Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland. His date of death may have been after 30 Sep 1855, the date of his wife's death.

Robert m. Elizabeth Hamilton. She was b. c. 1796 at Dalserf, Lanarkshire (per death certificate) and d. 30 Sep 1855 at School Street, Largs, 602 Ayrs, age 60, from "Dropsy Of The Ovaries".

Note: "Dropsy of the Ovaries" is an accumulation of fluid in one or more cells within the ovary, or in a serous cyst connected with the uterine appendages. The ovary loses its original form and structure, and frequently attains an immense size, containing several gallons of water. The effusion sadly interferes with respiration, and it causes exhaustion and often peritonitis.

Elizabeth is buried in the Churchyard of Largs. They had 3 or more children, including:

  1. William Miller Prentice, b. c. 1830 and bef. 30 Sep 1855, age 24 when he died (per Ann Cossar). He does not, however, appear at home in the 1841 Largs census.
  2. Janet Prentice, b. c. 1831, Scotland. At home in Largs in the 1841 census.
  3. John Prentice, b. c. 1833, Scotland. At home in Largs in the 1841 census.

Who are Robert Prentice's Parents?

He might, or might not, be the Robert Prentice shown in the IGI as b. 1796 in West Kilbride, Ayrshire, Scotland, which lies about 10 miles south of Largs (see map).
