We are helping Simon James Prentice and Alan Colin Prentice of South Africa in tracing the family Prentice roots. Alan's website is Alan Colin Prentice . Here is what we have so far:

1. Edward Prentice, b. c. 1865-72. He m. Mary Annie Miller in Sep 1891. They lived on Whitibrook Farm. Children (all birth dates and places per St. Catherine's Index):

4. Edward Prentice, b. Mar 1901, Solihull and lived in Birmingham, England (per Simon James Prentice).

6. Horace "Romo" George Prentice, b. Mar 1903, Birmingham. He d. Mar 1976, Birmingham. He m. Ruth Hope. Children:
   1. David Prentice. We have no further information about him.
7. Frank Miller Prentice, b. Jun 1906, Birmingham. and died Jun 1907.
8. Norman Jack Prentice, b. Mar 1911, Solihull. . . . . . . [3]

2. Arthur Alec Prentice, b. 12 Jan 1899, Solihull (per Alan Prentice, 8 Aug 2002) or 1 Dec 1901 (per Alan Colin Prentice). He m. Anne Pillsbury. They are Alan's grandparents. Children:

1. Eillen/Eileen Ann Prentice, b. 22 Jan 1936 and living in 2002. She m. Alf Guilfoyle.
2. Ruth Evelyn Prentice, b. 18 Jan 1928. She m. Ron Pendry.
3. Janet Mary Prentice, b. 18 Jun 1939, Birmingham, UK. She m. Michael Mason.
4. Arthur George Prentice, b. 1 Apr 1925, Birmingham. . . . . . . . [4]

3. Norman "Jack" Prentice, b. Mar 1911 (per St. Catherine's Index)and d. 1990. He lived in Birmingham, Warwickshire most of his life. He m. Doreen/Dorina in Wales in 1946 and was a coal miner in Waled during WW II. Children:

1. Kenneth Prentice. He lives in Norwich, England.
2. Dennis Prentice. He lived in Birmingham and d. c. 1997. Children:
   1. Daniel Prentice. We have no further information about him.
   2. Thomas/Tom Prentice. We have no further information about him.
   3. Simon Prentice. We have no further information about him.

4. Arthur George Prentice, b. 1 Apr 1925, Birmingham, England. He served in the Royal Navy during WW II aboard the HMS Rupert. Arther lives in Zimbabwe after having moved to South Africa in the early 1950's. He stayed in JHB for a year or two then moved up to Rhodesia where he has since lived. Return trips to the UK are all to family in the Midlands area of UK. He m. Winifred Zena Van Heerden on 29 Mar 1957, Salisbury, Rhodesia. She was b. 1 Jan 1930, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa and was the dau. of Joeseph Smith Van Heerden and Clarice Langley.Children:

1. Alan Colin Prentice, b. 27 Dec 1958, Harare, Zimbabwe. He m. Jeanne Christina Elizabeth Van Der Worp on 18 Dec 1987, Germiston, South Africa. She was b. 13 Jan 1956.Children:
   1. Kingsley Alan Prentice, b. 16 May 1989, Johannesburg, South Africa
2. George Malcom Prentice, b. 1 May 1960, Harare, Zimbabwe.
3. Barbara Anne Prentice, b. 18 Aug 1961, Salisbury, Rhodesia. She m. James Stannsfeild Nelson in Harare, Zimbabwe. Children:
   1. Harry Nelson.
   2. Rebbca Nelson.

In reviewing the 1881 census we found an Edward Prentice, b. c. 1866 in Milton, Oxfordshire. He was a lodger in the home of William and Alice Walker at 56 Buckingham St., Birmingham, Warwickshire. Also living there as a lodger, and probably an older brother, was George Prentice, b. c. 1857, Hornton, Oxfordshire. The occupations of both were given as "Packing Case Maker."

The IGI does not show a birth record for the 1866 Edward or the 1857 George, but it does show an Edward Prentice who was chr. 12 Sep 1830 at Saint Peter And Saint Paul, Milton By Gravesend, Kent, son of Thomas Prentice and Lucy.

Also shown in the IGI is the family of Thomas Prentis and Louise of Milton By Gravesend who had the following children:

1. James William Prentis, chr, 28 Jan 1827, Saint Peter And Saint Paul, Milton By Gravesend.

We also found in the IGI a Thomas Prentice who m. Sarah Harris on 17 Oct 1847 at Saint Peter And Saint Paul, Milton By Gravesend. Although a tight fit, the 1866 Edward might be their son.

My Rand McNally Atlas of England does not show a Milton By Gravesend in Kent, but does show a Milton which lies a short distance WSW of Canterbury in Kent.

In addition, the 1881 Birmingham census shows George Prentice, b. c. 1837, Kings Norton, Worcester, England. For more on his family, see our article in our Summer 1999 article about John Prentice of Birmingham . However, that George is not known to have a son named Edward.
