Edmund was still married to Annie when he had two children by Emily Keeling who had been baptised 7 May 1843 at Newport, Shropshire to William and Elizabeth (Rogers) Keeling. Emily d. 6 Sep 1873, Merton Rd., Wimbledon, of phthisis pulmonaris.

In 1881 Edmund Prentis was using the name of Edmund Audley and living at 4 Howe St, Broughton in Salford, Lancashire with his two children (Minnie aged 11 and Edith aged 10, below). He was shown as a railway officer (in later years he appears as storekeeper) for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway and is shown as the brother of the head of the household Clara E Howard (b. 1839, York). Jean Noble's email of 25 Apr 2009 adds the following information:

Clara E Howard's 'maiden' name was Corbitt - not Audley or Prentis. (Her brother, Charles James Corbitt, was my (Jean Noble's) great grandfather."

In 1881 Clara had two children with her who, according to a family story, were also children of Edmund Prentis/Audley. Clara appears to have used the name of Howard for her children and when Sydney Howard married (as Sydney Stephen Howard) on 2 July 1895 at the Register Office, West Derby, Lancashire he gave his father's name as Charles Edward Howard, gentleman. Jean Noble says that she has not found a marriage between anyone named Clara to a Charles Edward Howard. In the 1920s someone told Sydney Howard his father was Edmund Prentis and he moved his family elsewhere and has never been heard of since.

Children with Clara:

  1. Sydney Howard, b. 1872 He m. (as Sydney Stephen Howard) on 2 Jul 1895 at the Register Office, West Derby, Lancashire.
  2. Mary Howard, b. 1876.

Nean Noble's email of 25 Apr 2009 comments:

With Clara E Howard in 1881 was her sister Mary Ann Corbitt (born 1844 at 20 Spanns Buildings, St Pancras) who was shown as Mary Ann Maxair. Mary Ann Corbitt/Maxair had two children, Nina Audley Maxair born in 1879 and Edmund Audley Maxair born in 1880 and I suspect these are also Edmund's children because of the appearance of the name Audley. These two children were not with their mother in 1881 and do not appear on the 1881 census but in 1891 were with her at Camp Lane, St Lawrence, Ludlow.

The known children of Edmund and Emily were:

  1. Minnie Audley, b. 10 May 1869, 8 St. John's Hill Grove, Wandsworth . . . . . . . . . [9.6]
  2. Edith Audley, b. 13 Mar 1871, 1 Abyssinia Rd, Battersea. She d. 1911, Marylebone, London.

On these 2 children's birth certificates the father is shown as a commercial traveller.

He may be the same person as the Edmund Prentis who appears in the 1880 New York City census as an unmarried "Clerk To Consulate Great Britain."

9.4. Edward Lowther Prentis, b. 24 Sep 1858, Islington, London, England. He is probably the Edward Prentis shown in the IGI as chr. 10 Jul 1865 at Old Church, St. Pancras, London since 2 other apparent siblings are shown in the IGI as chr. that same date. He d. 8 Aug 1921, Te Puke, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. He is Dorothy Mutton's husband's grandfather.

Edward probably arrived at Auckland, NZ in 1882 from Australia. He also served as a seaman from Adelaide to Sydney on the Brittsgate (or Buksgate) on two trips earlier in 1882.

New Zealand marriage records show he m. Julia Reynolds Neill in 1891. She d. in 1895 in Te Puke, NZ. They had two children:

He m. and had 2 daughters. li> Dau, Prentis

Edward Prentis was a builder at a small settlement called Maketu, near Te Puke in the Bay of Plenty New Zealand until his death in 1921. It was said that he had been a "remittance" man - that he was sent away to NZ after having an affair with the maid. There was no other information passed down about his life prior to arriving in NZ but Lilac Rose Prentis was told money was sent from England to her Father - i.e.remittance. He did not speak of his family in England but it is interesting that his children bear the names of his siblings.

9.5. Vincent Prentis, b. 21 Feb 1861 (per IGI) and shown in the IGI as chr. 10 Jul 1865 at Old Church, St. Pancras, London since 2 other apparent siblings were chr. that same date. He d. before 1940 where his wife, Kate, appears as a widow.

Although there is a 4-year difference in the birth date and a difference in the surname spelling, he might, or might not, be the Vincent Prentiss, b. Feb 1865 in England who appears in the 1900 New York City, Kings Co., NY census with his wife, Kate, b. Sep 1868, England. 1040 census in Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., NY, living with the family of her daughter, Constance. Children of the 1865 Vincent (per census):

She appears in the home of her mother as Constance Asha, wife of William Asha (b. c. 1890, NY). Constance and her husband are surnamed "Oshea" in the 1940 census in Brookhaven. Neither appear in the SSDI. Daughter:
    1. Marjorie/Margaret K. Asha/Oshea, b. c. 1926, NY. At home in 1930 and 1940.

Also shown in the household in 1900 is Ada Heywood(?),called a sister in law, b. May 1872 in England, and probably Kate's sister, apparently umarried.

9.6 Minnie Audley Prentis, b. 10 May 1869, Balham, Surrey, England. Minnie appears as Minnie Prentis on the 1891 census with her father at the Royal Hotel, Embankment, London.

He was then apparently unmarried. He is likely the Edmund Prentis,b. 4 Dec 1884, who returned to New York City from a trip from Vera Cruz, Mexico, aboard the SS Morro Castle on 27 May 1921. His address at that time was 408 West 23rd St., New York City. Apparently accompanying him on his return from Vera Cruz was a young woman named Catherine Murphy living at that same address.

He is described in http://research.frick.org/directoryweb/browserecord.php?-action=browse&-recid=7305 as:

An engineer, a principal of the international engineering company Spencer, White and Prentis Inc. of New York, and a collector of early Americana.

Prior to that, he had become the world's first full-time croquet professional. He won a record eight U.S. Croquet Association titles before being inducted into the sport's hall of fame in 1989. He made instructional videos and became croquet's historian, contributing to what the association called its "growth and enjoyment" in the United States. All the while, Prentis was the longtime pro at Palm Beach Polo & Country Club in Wellington and maintained a residence in Delray Beach, along with homes in Westhampton Beach, N.Y., and Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where he had retired.

In a 1991 interview with The Palm Beach Post, the New York-born and Columbia University-educated Prentis described how the culture around croquet was changing -- and for the better, in his opinion. She m. George Robert Hughes on 15 May 1826 in St. Peters Parish, Leeds. He was b. c. 24 Feb 1799 in London and d. 29 Dec 1872 in North Adelaide, South Australia. The following material was posted by Bob Howlett at http://users.tpg.com.au/havik/genealogy/MFFFP.html :

George and Charlotte Hughes and came to South Australia in 1840 on the Diadem; see the passenger list. In this list, William Frederick's name is enclosed in parentheses, but there is no indication of what this notation is supposed to mean. My best guess is that the name was actually not on the original list, but the transcriber knew by some independent means that William Frederick was indeed one of the passengers. Notice that the name of George Robert junior is also missing.

According to family legend, George was a tailor by profession. Hughes memorabilia inherited by my cousin Peter Hughes (in accordance with the "eldest male heir" custom) includes his great great great grandfather's "tailor scissors", bearing the inscription "G. R. Hughes, Diadem, 1840". The tailor's scissors

The Family History of Thomas Hutchens says that George worked in Adelaide for some time and then moved to Nairne, where the three youngest children of George and Charlotte were born. Another family source says that George, Charlotte and family went to Murrundi, the settlement on the River Murray founded by Edward John Eyre as a base for his work as Protector of Aborigines, before moving to Nairne; however, I think that this story can refer to nothing more than a brief visit to Murrundi. It is unclear when George and Charlotte moved to North Adelaide, where their deaths occurred.

According to his death certificate George's profession was Commission Agent, his usual residence was at Tynte Street North Adelaide, and his death occurred at Tynte Street on 29/12/1872, the cause of death being diarrhœa. Charlotte's usual residence at the time of her death on 29/9/1884 was Archer Street, North Adelaide, her death occurred there, and her death certificate states that the cause of death was "Old Age, Apoplexy, Paralysis". I suppose that if one thing doesn't get get you then another will!
