Peter Prentice of PA and Jasper Co., IA

Peter Prentice of PA and Jasper Co., IA
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2002 and Revised 11 Oct 2009

Peter Prentice was b. c. 1833 in PA. He does not appear in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census. At some date before the birth of his son, Albert, in 1872, Peter moved to Jasper Co., IA. He appears as a Farmer in the 1880 Mound Prairie, Jasper Co., IA census with his wife and family. He does not appear in the 1900 census.

He m. Caroline, b. c. 1847 in PA. Children:

  1. Albert Prentice, b. c. 1872, IA. At home in 1880 in Mound Prairie, Jasper Co., IA. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
  2. Homer A. Prentice, b. c. 1874, IA. At home in 1880 in Mound Prairie, Jasper Co., IA. Not in 1900 or 1910 census.
  3. Mary J. Prentice, b. c. 1878, IA. At home in 1880 in Mound Prairie, Jasper Co., IA. Not in 1900 census by that surname and perhaps deceased or married.

Alson living in the household is Catherine Prentice, age 78 and b. c. 1802 in PA. She is probably Peter's mother. She does not appear in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census.

Who are Peter Prentice's Parents?

The only clue we have so far is from the 1880 census which says that Peter's race was white and that both of Peter's parents were b. in PA. That would place his father's birth date approximately 1795-1802 with his mother's name probably being Catherine who was b. c. 1802, PA. She does not appear in the 1850, 1860 or 1870 census.

A John Prentis and his family appears in the 1820 census in Lower Saucon, Northampton Co., PA, apparently foreign born and not naturalized. No ages or sex breakdown is given.

A Pheby Prentice appears in the 1830 census in Easton, Northampton Co., PA, apparently a female, age 20-30, (b. 1800-1810) and alone in the household..

A Phoebe Prentice, appears in the 1840 census in Easton, Northampton Co., PA, but again with no specification of the numbers and ages of those in the household. A Peter Prentice appears 11 lines below Phoebe in the 1840 census in Easton Lehigh Ward, Northampton Co., PA, but with no specification of the numbers and ages of those in the household.

No other Prentice family appears in Jasper Co., IA in the 1870 or 1880 census.
