Oliver Prentice of Pittstown, NY
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2001 and Revised 13 Oct 2016

Update of 13 Oct 2016. Oliver Prentice is likely #21.20 in our Thomas Prentice eBook. That now tentatively replaces this article.

INTRODUCTION: The information in this article would not have been possible without the generous contributions of a great many of the descendants of Oliver Prentice who are identified within the article, below.

Research is continuing in our efforts to identify Oliver Prentice's parents and ancestry If you have information about any of Oliver ancestors or descendants, please contact us at the Prentice Newsletter. Be sure to give the full title and date of this article in the Subject line of the email.

1. Oliver[1] Prentice was born circa 1773 [1]. He died probably between 1841 and 1847 in Etobicoke, Canada. Peter Johnsonue's email of 25 Jun 2016 relates that there is a letter written by wife Lydia in Feb. 1841 where she states Oliver was feeling better. Thus he was still around by 1841.

Although conjecture, he may be a son of Ephraim Prentice, #29 on pg. 269 of our 1996 PRENTICE book who lived in nearby Grafton, Rennselaer Co., NY.

CarolAnne Chepurny indicates that Oliver, his wife Lydia, and children Dorothea and Jacob may have been living in the Jacob Delong household in the 1800 Pittstown, Rennselaer Co., NY census. Although individuals were not listed by name in 1800, there were two extra adults and two children. Also they were all in Jacob Delong's household in Toronto a year later.

In 1813, Oliver Prentice and Jacob Delong, his wife's father, were charged by the Canadian government with high treason. By email of 22 Feb 2007, a descendant, Randall Smart, #13i below, advises that the charges would have been levied in Upper Canada since Canada at that time was divided into Upper and Lower Canada and that the Dominion of Canada did not exist until 1867. A copy of the Poster listing those convicted of High Treason at Ancaster, including Jacob Delong, but not Oliver Prentice, can be found at Gov. of Canada Archives .

As a result of the charge, Oliver and his family moved to Ohio. It is not presently known what his actions were which resulted in the charge of high treason. In 1815 he lived in Painesville, Geauga, OH. Farmer. It is unknown whether the charges were dropped, but shortly after 1821 Oliver and his family returned to Canada. He does not appear in the Ohio 1820 Census index.

Returning to Etobicoke, Oliver Prentice can be found on the 1837 directory on concession B, lot 31. (The lot in Etobicoke belonged to Oliver Prentice who sold it to Jacob Nell in 1815, but was then bought by Jacob Prentice and Solomon Prentice, per Guylaine Petrin, email, 22 Jan 2011.) In the 1847 directory, Lydia Prentice is living at the same address, leading me to believe that Oliver died between those two dates. The lot in Etobicoke belonged to Oliver Prentice who sold it to Jacob Nell in 1815, but was then bought by Jacob Prentice and Solomon Prentice.

Oliver Prentice married Lydia Delong, dau. of Jacob Delong, on 6 Nov 1796 in Pittstown, NY (per Peter Johnson, email, 14 Jan 2008). By email of 8 Sep 2008, Lane Prentice relates that the information was found in a "badly water stained notebook. . . of Simeon Button, Justice of the Peace." For Lydia's ancestry and Ahnentafel, See Fn. 2 . See also Ancestry.com . Children:

Hiram had a non-marriage relationship with Elizabeth Kaake They had a daughter:

  1. Nancy Prentice, b. c. 1820. She m. Jonas Christner and they appear in the censuses of Canada - 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891 and 1901. Nancy's first name varies: Nancy, Ann, and Jannet. A Jonas Christner died 27 Oct 1905 in Lambton County, Ontario. Should it be him, the death registration incorrectly states that he was born in Ireland. Each census return indicates he was born in Canada and where origin was recorded, it is German! A death registration has not been found for Nancy but it has been suggested she died in 1903.

The known children of Nancy Prentice and jonas Christner are:

The origins of Oliver Prentice have been a troublesome issue for any of his descendants who have delved into the family. My PRENTICE great-aunts and uncles were proud of their roots and perceived family loyalty to the Crown. Ironically, my PRENTICES were alligned with Rebel families such as the DeLONGS, and Oliver did some nasty stuff during the War of 1812 and got himself booted out of Canada. They never knew that. I would especially love to know his father's name, as Rev War research is a key interest, and I think it quite likely his father may have been involved with the Rebels. There were some PRENTICE Loyalists, but nothing has surfaced to suggest a link with them. (Both my wife and I have a few Rebel ancestors, and many, many more LOyalists ancestors. I am currently the Pres. of the UEL Assoc of Canada).

December 11, 1914 Joseph H. Prentice Passes Away

Joseph H. Prentice, who had been suffering from a tubecular trouble since last summer, which was considered the outgrowth of an injury received sometime previous, and whose health had been steadily declining for several months, died at his home in Asotin at about 11:30 on Thursday night, December 10th. Funeral was held from the family residence at ten o'clock Saturday forenoon, services being preached by Rev. J. S. Bell of the Methodist church and interment was made in the Asotin cemetery.

Joseph H. Prentice was born June 21, 1874, at Heathcote, Ontario, and there continued residence for a number of years, when he moved with his people to New York. From New York he came west to Kittson county, Minnesota where he resided for several years, and where eighteen years ago [c. 1856] he was united in marrriage to Miss Emma Dammarell, at Boulder.

Eleven years ago [c. 1863] he and his family came to Asotin county and took up residence at Cloverland. Between seven and eight years ago [c. 1866-1867] he moved to Asotin and up to the time of his taking ill about six months ago was an employee of the Fulton store, as well as being a representative of one or two life insurance companies.

Mr. Prentice was one of that happy, congenial disposition, who made acquaintances easily, which acquaintance rapidly grew into friendship, and endeavored to always do the honorable thing as between man and man, in business or other affairs. He was most kind and considerate of his family, and while he did not possessany realty at the time of his passing away, he had been most thoughtful of his wife and taken on some old line life insurance, as well as being a member of the Woodmen of the World, and carrying the limit of fraternal insurance in that order. All who knew Josep Prentice will miss his jolly, cordial greeting, and his wife and two daughters and two sons have the sympathy of all friends in this their bereavement.
