English Records: Obtaining Copies of
Winter 2000 and Revised 22 Sep 2000

From time to time, we, and others, have wondered how to obtain copies of birth, marriage and death records from England. By email of 20 Sep 2001, Ian Prentice has provided us with information about the procedure. His email is as follows:

    1. Having found the date of a birth, marriage or death, you need to find the exact quarter when it was registered, the district and the reference number. These can be found through any Mormon Family History Centre which has, or can obtain, a microfilm of the St. Catherine's House Indexes. It is important to realise, though, that a number of certificates were lost or destroyed in one or other of the World Wars leaving no trace of the Birth, Marriage or Death.

    2. With this information you need to contact or visit The Family Records Centre, 1 Myddleton Street, London EC1R 1UW, telephone 0151 471 4800 (there is a web site at http://www.pro.gov.uk/). The Centre will explain exactly how to obtain the certificate and what it will cost - this obviously varies depending on how far away you are.
