Mortimer S. Prentiss of OH, IN and IL

Mortimer S. Prentiss of IN or OH and New Boston, Mercer Co., IL
By Linus Joseph Dewald Jr., Editor
Summer 2002 and Revised 8 Feb 2011

1. Mortimer S. Prentiss was b. c. 1822 in OH. He appears as a Carpenter in the 1850 Brownville Twp., Union Co., IN Census and in the 1860 New Boston, Mercer, IL census as a dentist with a notation saying he was born in Indiana. He later appears in the 1870 and 1880 census in Rushville, Schuyler Co., IL.

Random thought: Is pulling nails and patching plaster good training for pulling and filling teeth?

Mortimer m. Hannah M. Trembly on 6 Dec 1846, Union, IN. We have conflicting information about her birth and death; (1) One source sahs she was b. b. c. 1835 IN and d. Oct 1883. (2) A second source says she was b. Aug 1826 in Brownsville, Union Co., IN, and d. after 1900. She was the dau. of Peter Trembly and Margaret Welliver. An Ancestor Chart for Hannah can be found at Ancestry.com . Children per 1860 New Boston census, 1900 Rushville, Schuyler, IN census, and Ancestry.com :

He might also be the Harry E. Prentiss shown in the Milton, Umatilla Co., OH census as a single boarder, b. c. 1867 in IL.

2. Mortimer T. Prentiss, b. c. 1850, IN. He is likely the Mortimer Prentice, b. Sep 1850 who appears in the 1880 and 1900 Galesburg, Knox, IL census. He may also be the Mortimer Prentice, Cooper, b. c. 1849, IN, who appears in the 1870 census at Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., KS.

The 1880 census identifies Mortimer's wife as Caroline Cooney who he m. 21 Feb 1876 in Schuyler Co., IL (per IL marriage index). She was b. c. 1851, IL. The 1900 census identifies his wife, likely a 2nd wife, as Margaret, b. Jun 1851, IL. Not in 1910, 1920 or 1930 census. Children:

3. Samuel S. Prentiss, b. Nov 1852. The 1860, 1910 and 1920 census says he was b. in OH, but the 1880 Schuyler Co., IL census says he was b. in IN.

In the 1900 Schuyler Co. census Dudley is called "Douglas C." and his wife is called "Martha W." Children:

  2. Berton/Burton L. Prentiss, b. Jan 1882, IL. Living with brother, Guy, in 1910 census.
  3. May L. Prentiss, b. Dec 1883, IL
  4. Mortimer D. Prentiss, b. Nov 1885, IL

Who are Mortimer S. Prentiss' Parents?

Also living in New Boston in 1860 was Stanton Prentiss. Because of the common residence, and same surname spelling, plus the fact that Mortimer's birth date fits into the known children of Stanton, Mortimer might be Stanton's son.

On the other hand, it does seem unlikely since Mortimer would have been only 10 years old when Stanton and Susannah moved to Illinois and it seems unlikely they would have left Mortimer behind.

There is also a curious entry in a Mercer County newspaper: Sheriff's sale in favor of Stanton V. Prentiss against M. M. Prentis & Courtney Drury Lot 5, Block 3, Town of New Boston. Public sale November 21, 1859. It is unclear whether "M. M. Prentis" is the same person as Mortimer S. Prentiss. If so, a forced sale seems unlikely if they were closely related. The Mortimer Prentiss family was gone by 1870.
